According to this article about 25% of school districts don't have the funding needed to make up for the loss of Covid relief funding that expires after this school year. For some, that means looking to bonds, sinking funds or other millages to make up the shortfall. If you are a district that needs help passing your millage/bond/sinking fund in an upcoming election - we have a lot of experience helping districts get the yes vote they need. September 30, 2023 marks the third National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On this day, we honour Survivors of residential schools, commemorate the lives of those children who never returned home, and recognize the ongoing impacts of residential schools as vital to the reconciliation process. This week, BC Housing employees gathered to reflect on our future goals and connection to reconciliation. The event began with song and storytelling from Sempulyan Stewart Gonzales, Survivor and Councilor from Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). We also heard from Phyllis Webstad, residential school Survivor and founder of Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day and the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation is a day of both reflection and action. We recognize that there is still much work to be done in our sector and throughout society. We commit to walking alongside Indigenous partners, taking action to affirm the rights of Indigenous peoples. "Reconciliation is not something that government can legislate into reality and it’s not something Indigenous people can force on the rest of Canada. Every person in Canada—every citizen, every immigrant, every refugee, and every visitor—is responsible for Reconciliation.” ~ Senator Murray Sinclair Former Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for Canada (Indigenous Innovation, 2019) #NationalDayofTruthAndReconciliation #TruthAndReconciliation #NDTR #NDTR2023 #Together4Housing

WITH A CLEAR EYE “Give me hope, Johanna.” We only have an intent to voluntarily form a Government of National Unity (GNU). Read the “Statement of Intent of the 2024 Government of National Unity” for yourself. At least poverty, joblessness and inequality, are some of the first challenges the prospective participants want to tackle. But they have put economic growth up front. In chasing growth the parties would, from their view of intended growth, prioritise land reform, job creation and livelihood support, not to be false. There will not be peace, which perhaps goes for growth as well, if the land issue is not first resolved. In the spatial equality created by such resolution, education, skills development and health care, should be addressed foremost, to lift our people out of poverty and misery. In such a space public service delivery and law enforcement will necessarily thrive.

Last week, the Everett Youth Initiative Council (EYIC) led a groundbreaking participatory voting process, engaging high school students in deciding how to allocate $1 million in ARPA funds. The youth showed remarkable leadership and initiative, developing and implementing a comprehensive voting process that allowed their peers to have a direct say in the projects that matter most to them. Over two days (Oct 17-18), votes were cast on official election voting machines, ensuring a transparent and legitimate process. And the results are in! The top three projects, as voted by Everett youth, are: 1️⃣ No-fare transit cards for equitable access to transportation 2️⃣ Scholarships for higher education 3️⃣ Little pantries to support food security and hygiene needs This initiative is a testament to the power of youth engagement and participatory democracy. HRiA is proud of all the young leaders involved, and we cannot wait to see the positive impact these projects will have on the community. #YouthEmpowerment #ParticipatoryDemocracy #CommunityEngagement #ARPAPower #EverettYouthInitiativeCouncil
