A long commute is not just really boring. It is, in economic terms, wasted time (and famously time is money), writes Christopher Dorrell. Better transport networks also means cities are more likely to benefit from those all-important agglomeration effects. Part of the reason why British cities are so under-served is down to cost. The UK pays more than twice the European average per mile of new tramlines while for undergrounds and metro lines, it pays more than three times the European average. Interesting stand point, especially keeping in mind the challenge it is to deliver new (and affordable) accommodations in London! I found the proposal to "top up" many existing buildings with "light weight" extra floors or dwellings very innovative. It's already being done in some projects whereby the old building is renovated and the addition of a couple floors pays for the renovations. Everybody wins!

I find the commute highly productive and not at all boring. There’s this cool invention called “a book”. I often see others with a new device called “a laptop”. The boring thing is listening to other people’s phone calls. Particularly the divorce lawyer who discusses cases in a busy carriage.

Broken promises about levelling up plus the extortionate cost of travelling holds many cities in the UK back. Then the government wonders why overall productivity is poor.🤔
