With over 12,000 staff, HALO's primary duty is to serve people affected by conflict by clearing landmines and explosive remnants of war that threaten lives and livelihoods. As an organization committed to creating operational efficiency and empowering communities, HALO is launching the "Women in GIS for Demining" project in partnership with the Trimble Foundation. This project aims to hire and train female GIS officers, utilizing geospatial technologies to make a lasting impact on conflict-affected communities. Job Summary: The HALO Trust is looking for a dynamic Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Assistant to join our team. As a GIS Assistant, you will play a crucial role in information management, providing support and geospatial products to field teams and program management. You will ensure that data is accurate and fit for purpose, contributing to the improvement of our GIS capabilities. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology and make a difference in conflict-affected areas. Key Responsibilities: Assist field operations by providing training, data, maps, and GIS tools. Support field teams in setting up and effectively using ArcGIS Survey123, ArcGIS Field Maps, and Trimble GNSS receivers. Conduct quality assurance and quality control of spatial data collected in the field to ensure its suitability for the intended purpose. Produce GIS mapping products to aid program management and reporting. Maintain GIS web maps and feature services, and provide suggestions for improvements. Manage Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps offline maps for use by field operation teams. Perform other related GIS duties as required. Qualifications, Experience, and Key Attributes: Degree in Geographical Information Science or a related field. Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience. Strong desire and motivation to learn and apply GIS and technology effectively. Basic knowledge of GIS theory and proficiency in using software such as ArcGIS or QGIS. Experience in delivering training and excellent presentational skills. Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite. Good communication skills, with the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and religions. Resilience and adaptability in a complex, fast-paced, and changing environment. RESPONSIBILITIES:    •       Performs the data entry, update, and maintenance functions for a GIS database using workstations, personal computers, and GIS software. Works on core data while maintaining database standards and system security.  •       Researches and evaluates source data using standard methods and documentation. Interprets and transfers data from source documents. •       Performs quality control for database maintenance. Reviews input and output. Ensures integrity of database changes.  •       Locates and compiles graphic data and attributes from plans, profiles, and other sources. •      Build a model by adding and connecting data and tools. Iteratively process every feature class, raster, file, or table in a workspace. •      Visualize your workflow sequence as an easy-to-understand diagram. •      Run a model step by step, up to a selected step, or run the entire model. •      Make your model into a geoprocessing tool that can be shared or can be used in Python scripting and other models. •       Operates and maintains data input/output devices. May contact service personnel for simple maintenance and repair of equipment. KNOWLEDGE: Has a Bachelor's Degree in Natural Resource Management and a Certificate degree in Geographic Information Science. COMPLEXITY: Work consists of fairly standard procedures and tasks where basic analytic ability is required, as in comparing numbers and simple facts in selecting the correct action. IMPACT OF ACTIONS:  Errors in work typically lead to minor inconvenience and costs. Work is typically performed under moderate supervision and within standard operating procedures. With Australia's vast land area being 200 times that of Taiwan, file sizes can exceed a hundred times, such as a state's DEM reaching a hefty 200GB. Managing such large data requires efficient tools like PostgreSQL, Geoserver, and GCP. - **Coordinate System Challenges:** Australia's geodetic and projected coordinate systems can encounter errors over time due to plate tectonics. These discrepancies, which can reach several meters, are crucial to consider when working with GIS data in the country. - **Georeferencing Necessity:** Unlike Taiwan, Australia has seen a history of georeferencing numerous paper and hand-drawn maps. This process, less common in Taiwan, highlights the importance of efficient georeferencing tools for effective GIS project execution.
