The City of Calgary is charting a 30-year vision and 10-year action plan to support Calgary's growth. This includes identifying where we want natural spaces 🌳 , homes 🏠 , amenities 🏬 , and transportation infrastructure 🚏 to support our daily lives. Why is this relevant to nonprofits? The way we build our city affects workforce attraction and retention, nonprofit access to real estate, and the health and productivity of employees. The City Building program may also intersect with your nonprofit’s mission. How you can get 1000 citizen votes at your next public consultation… Who’s been here? You’ve trawled through demographic data. You’ve sourced the land for your development. Spent hours finding, then contacting the owner. You build a relationship with them. They want to sell to you. You’ve done your DD. You know your policy You’ve fought for your funding. Done your calculations. You’ve battled every step of the way to make this development a reality. You go through planning, permitting, entitlement. Hacking through red tape like you’re chartering a course through the Amazon. You have contractors working on designs, traffic mapping, infrastructure, logistics, supplies…. But wait….what’s that? Dissenters block you at the community board.  ‘Not here’, they cry unreasonably loudly for 10 people. So what’s the best salve for 10 NIMBYs? 1000 positive votes from the rest of the community. You fire up Give My View. You send out a survey to the whole community. Not just 100, 200, 500 people.  Literally thousands, tens of thousands of people ready to engage. They give you the real sentiment of the area. What that community needs.  At that time.  In their own words. You take these results to the council, the dissenters.  And you can’t argue with the power of people.

While most businesses understand the importance of backing up their server and files, many forget to back up their website! Most sites are hosted on a third-party platform like Amazon or WordPress. However, these hosts have limits on what they back up, and the terms and conditions you agreed to will most likely waive their responsibility to preserve and back up your files and data. Therefore, if you’re posting a lot of new content, you should be backing up your site weekly if not daily. Hackers can (and do!) corrupt websites all the time. If you don’t want to have the cost of a down website and the cost of rebuilding it, back up your website! Side tip: Does your business depend on your website being online? The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities released some updated guidance on the enforcement of CIL (Community Infrastructure Levy) at the end of April 2024. One element of particular interest is the clarification on retrospective applications. Developers will need to be aware that where they are seeking retrospective planning, there are no reliefs or exemptions (save for the minor development exemption). This is likely to have a direct impact on applications made under section 73A TCPA where there has been a breach of planning permission, and may lead individuals to look at alternative routes to rectify breaches.
