What can communities do better for people who bike? One resident of a Bronze-level BFC suggests focusing on connected routes, and we have to agree. Becoming a Silver or higher-level Bicycle Friendly Community doesn't happen overnight, but connecting local biking and walking routes is a winning strategy for encouraging more local active transportation. Austroads Webinar Recording: Safe Active Streets – an Overview of Western Australia’s Pilot Program The Department of Transport Western Australia has been working with Western Australian local governments to develop, trial and evaluate ‘safe active streets’ to encourage more people to walk, wheel and ride in their communities. The pilot program trialled and adapted common local area traffic management treatments to create 30 km/h environments with unique designs created that reflect local community needs and context. This webinar explored the origins of the program, how and why it started, shared high-level insights from the evaluation, including what worked, what didn’t and what was learnt along the way. It also shared next steps for the program and how this work will be used to inform guidelines to support the delivery of safe active street infrastructure by local government into the future. Our Who I Am Foundation volunteers in #Phoenix will be doing another Family Hike and Trail Clean-Up (PHX)! SATURDAY MORNING (FEBRUARY 3RD) we will be cleaning up the Holbert Trailhead on South Mountain in South Phoenix! Difficulty: Difficult Access: Start at the Park Main Entranced. Take the first left on to Phoenix South Mountain Park. From this road, proceed to Holbert Trailhead to continue onto Holbert Trail. This trail offers a steady climb to the upper areas of South Mountain Park. Hike the extension trail that leads to Dobbins Lookout and be rewarded with a magnificent view of the valley below. The Holbert Trail also provides a route to connect with the National Trail just east of the T.V. Towers and west of Buena Vista Lookout. Distance: 2.5 mi Elevation Change: 1,100 ft. Hiking is an excellent low-impact workout, and is an outdoor activity delivering benefits beyond scenic and fun. Below are five reasons to hike with your kids: 1. Exercise. 2. Build self-confidence 3. Exposure to wildlife 4. Practice “Leave no trace” A great opportunity to talk about why we do not leave our trash in the park, and what happens to the litter that is left behind. 5. Unplug together We all know that kids spend a lot of time using digital media, and it is true for adults as well. Heading out for a family hike is a great way to take a break from your devices and connect with each other and the outdoors for a while instead. Make sure you dress appropriately!! Our quarterly policy newsletter is out, and just like the snow report, it is a flurry… The House has been steadily making headway on a package of recreation policy that would improve and expand access to outdoor recreation on public lands. The Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act will compliment America’s Outdoor Recreation (AORA) Act, which includes a number of recreation bills that Outdoor Alliance and our partners worked to develop. On the administrative front, we’re continuing to engage on BLM’s public lands rule, oil and gas regulations, and the Forest Service’s climate resilience efforts. Last week, the Forest Service and National Park Service released guidance on climbing management that would restrict the use of fixed anchors in Wilderness areas. We’ll be working with our partners to address this issue, making sure that climbers, and the outdoor recreation community can retain safe and sustainable access to America’s public lands. https://lnkd.in/gfnckJhG
