The truth is, I've been knee-deep in my dissertation for the past couple of weeks. You know how it goes – juggling deadlines, pouring over research, and trying to keep it all together. It's been a whirlwind, to say the least. But hey, I've got some good news! I finally submitted my dissertation and wrapped up my master's studies(𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴 & 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘱𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘳!). Phew! Feels like a weight off my shoulders, let me tell you. Now that the dust has settled, I'm excited to dive back into my regular routine, including posting on here again. 𝗢𝗵, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 – I'm on the lookout for graduate Project Management roles. From a Corporate Student to a Project Manager: My Career Journey so far and my Tips for Success My career began as a corporate student at Schwarz IT KG. Within 3 years I had the chance to work on exciting tasks and challenges to get familiar with the company and its structures. From there, I transitioned to a frontend developer, where I honed my skills in coding and problem-solving. Throughout I had the opportunity to be part of the development of an internal component framework. Moving into project management allowed me to see the bigger picture and develop my leadership and communication abilities. However, I am still at the beginning of my journey and I have a lot to learn. While working full-time, I am pursuing a part-time Master’s degree. Currently, I am in my third MBA semester at the FOM Hochschule für Oekonomie & Management in Düsseldorf. Balancing work and studies is definitely challenging but incredibly rewarding. Here are some tips that helped me stay on track: 🎯 Set Clear Goals: Define your short- and long-term objectives to get closer to the desired outcome step by step. 📚 Keep Learning: Stay curious and continuously seek new knowledge. 💬 Network: Build relationships with mentors who guide you through the jungle. 🏋♂️ Embrace Challenges: See difficult tasks as growth opportunities. ⚖ Balance Life: Prioritize self-care to avoid burnout. I've always wondered why some of the top companies in the world, like Google Apple Amazon Microsoft Alphabet Inc. Facebook Meta NVIDIA RBC The Hershey Company seem to focus primarily on hiring experienced professionals while overlooking fresh graduates or those with only a few years of experience. It's no doubt that they aim to maintain their high standards by selecting the best talent available, but this approach raises a crucial question: What about the fresh talent? Fresh graduates bring a unique set of advantages to the table. They are often full of energy, enthusiasm, and innovative ideas. They are quick learners, adaptable, and can be molded to fit the company's culture and values. By not giving these individuals a chance, companies might be missing out on fresh perspectives and untapped potential that could drive future success. Moreover, there are many professionals with just a few years of experience who possess incredible skills and a strong willingness to learn and grow. Why do engineers never stick to engineering? When was the last time you saw an engineer working in the field of engineering? Everybody switches their field completely working as managers, consultants, digital marketers and even investment bankers or stock brokers. While it is not accurate to claim that engineers universally avoid technical roles, it is true that some engineers transition into managerial positions or become consultants at firms such as McKinsey. This shift is often driven by various factors, including the typical career progression found in many organizations that encourages individuals to move into managerial roles for continued growth. Engineers, equipped with diverse skills beyond technical expertise, such as problem-solving and project management, find these skills transferable to managerial and consulting positions. Many engineers seek broader impact, strategic decision-making, and a change of pace, prompting them to explore roles that involve leadership, business strategy, and varied challenges. The desire for leadership opportunities, interest in business aspects, and the demand for analytical skills in consulting firms contribute to the appeal of these alternative career paths. However, it is crucial to recognize that career trajectories are highly individual, and numerous engineers find fulfillment by remaining technical contributors throughout their careers. A brilliant example of this is Sundar Pichai, IIT and Stanford graduate who did his MBA from Wharton and joined Google later on as a product management lead. Why does my #PhD help me at work? 1.     #Communication skills: In your #PhD, you work with different kind of project partner, both from industry and university. You learn how to listen to different voices and what information matters most to your person opposite. You learn how to ask the right questions and communicate your point of view in dependence of the addressee. As a Product Manager, I have to work with so many different people and I have to listen carefully. Each person is different and has a right to get the information in a form that the person can work with it. 2.     #Presentation skills: For all different kind of conference, the defense of your thesis and internal and external project meetings, you prepare your own slides and it is your job to transfer the message and tell the story you want to tell. To bring topics to the management is one important part of being a Product Manager. Often you do have only a short time frame to convince the other party about the topic. 3.     Ability to #collaborate: During your #PhD, you form a unique bond with your colleagues which makes them your family. In my job as a Product Manager, it is also my job to bring together different parties of the company working on development projects. I learn so many things from the experts of all different kind of departments such as R&D, Engineering, Marketing, Sales, Sales Systems, Application Fields. We at #netzsch also collaborate actively with universities to get insights into the newest developments. Both university and industry learn from each other day by day. 4.     #Acceleratedlearning: As a #PhD-student, you have to read so many publications to get an overview about your topic. Often you write proposals for future #PhD-students as well and work on industry projects in parallel. In all those different topics, you have to read up fast on the background information and get as many theoretical knowledge as possible, before you move on in the execution where you try to learn new methods and have to listen carefully to the person introducing you to the method. As a Product Manager, I am working on different topics in parallel. I am not designing the final parts, but I have to have the overview and understand what happens in the development projects, only then I can transfer information correctly from one involved party to the next. 5.     #ProjectManagement: In your #PhD, you have had a save environment to plan and act on your own project. You deal with really everything from planning, execution and financial control. In my job in #netzsch, I am responsible for the coordination of the development projects for dry grinding.
