Clarence Chan’s Post

Huge thank you to Mercer Malaysia for hosting myself and Stephenie Liew for an in-person training on Intellect's solutions (with Travis Tan's sunny presence in the background and being reliable as always running the virtual side of things). Waking up before 5am to fly in for the session was definitely worth it, and I sincerely appreciate the many insightful questions that the audience posed. Q&A is by far my favorite part of such sharing sessions because it shows a genuine level of interest in understanding the product and our proposition, while also pushing me to better articulate our value as a brand. Malaysia is a market in which I see so much potential. The 2015 National Health & Morbidity Study identified 29% of all adults in Malaysia as having a mental health disorder, while the same study in 2019 noted that 2.3% (~500,000) of adults had depression - and this was pre-Covid. As quoted from the National Mental Health Strategic Plan 2020-2025 however, "resources for mental health services and programmes are scarce." Sociocultural stigma complicates matters by adding another potential barrier to those in need seeking help, even if such help exists. The very fact that the above studies were conducted and a Mental Health Strategic Plan prepared is extremely heartening, because these initiatives validate mental health issues in a region where such conversations are oftentimes still very much taboo. My parting note to today's gracious audience was simple - we in this space have the power to influence this growing conversation, whether through our conversations with clients and partners or better yet, bringing our solutions to those in need. It is a heavy responsibility, yet one that is greatly rewarding. I treasure this reminder kindly shared by Lara Pham - amidst the day-to-day cycle of chasing KPIs and executing tasks, never forget that the work we do impacts lives in a very literal sense. I am grateful for that anchor even as I write this at 130am, and end this post with an open mind and a full heart.
