So many speakers today at #LEVS23 have emphasised the importance of the zero emissions vehicle mandate, due to be debated in parliament this week. By securing ZEV supply, and setting a timetable for the expansion of the market, the mandate enables investors in all sorts of vital technologies to proceed with confidence. But as DfT's Richard Bruce highlighted, vehicle supply is only one point of a triangle that also includes consumer demand and infrastructure. On infrastructure, I thought one of the most important announcements in last week's autumn statement was planning reform to speed up the connection of high power chargepoints on the motorway network. But by one estimate I heard today, 500k chargepoints are needed by 2035. That means we still need to install hundreds of thousands of on-street chargers for those without driveways. On consumer demand, tax incentives are doing their job in the market for company cars, which is driving much of the growth in BEV market share for new cars. But markets for both new vans and second hand cars are lagging behind, and I've yet to hear convincing policy prescriptions for either of these absolutely key sectors.

Digital product passports are rapidly advancing circularity in the automotive industry. Beyond the much-discussed battery passport, vehicle passports will play a key role in enabling automotive circularity globally.
