📢Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA) is putting in public consultation new Clean Cooking methodology to address overcrediting. Give your view! The methodology references the most up-to-date estimations of fraction of non-renewable biomass (fNRB) at the national and subnational level, and disallows the use of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) TOOL30, which historically allowed for wide variability in fNRB calculations, and unrealistically high values. Cookstove performance degradation over time is addressed through the inclusion of each cookstove vintage in fuel efficiency monitoring samples. All projects shall apply a 5% deduction to address certain risks that cannot be feasibly measured at the project level or for which there is insufficient data to support a more granular estimate. These include leakage and the risk of non-permanence, although the latter is also covered to some extent through the fNRB parameter. The methodology addresses rebound and stacking by incentivizing direct fuel consumption measurements (through KPTs), which capture both, and applying conservative caps for displacing baseline fuel consumption when usage is measured primarily through surveys. Potential Hawthorne effects are addressed through a 10% discount applied to the maximum allowed average fuel savings when fuel consumption is measured through a KPT alone without sensors."

🌍✨ Exciting News! ✨🌍 📢 The Clean Cooking & Climate Consortium (4C), led by the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA), has released the Comprehensive Lowered Emission Assessment and Reporting (CLEAR) Methodology for Cooking Energy Transitions. This is the first methodology to apply to all cooking transition scenarios, providing a rigorous and trusted way to quantify carbon emission reductions from clean cooking projects. The CLEAR methodology is intended to become the standard for all cooking projects under Article 6.2 and Article 6.4 of the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as the Voluntary Carbon Market. The methodology applies to both “metered” clean cooking projects, which continuously monitor how much fuel is being used, and “non-metered” projects. 🗓️ Public comments are invited until August 2, 2024. These modules have enhanced our capability to set informed reduction goals and improve our climate communication, aligning with the growing demands of both domestic and international markets for transparency in CO₂ impacts. Our next aim is to make a GHG-compliant report and be able to include LCA-based calculations of the products we sell. The New F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573: A Significant Step Towards Climate Neutrality The European Union has made a significant step towards achieving its environmental and climate objectives by publishing the new F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573 in the Official Journal of the European Union. This regulation, which came into effect on March 11, 2024, sets the framework for the gradual and total phase-out of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by 2050, marking a significant change in the EU's environmental policy. 🔵 Objectives of the New Regulation The main goal of the new F-Gas Regulation is to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the use of fluorinated refrigerants. These gases, known as HFCs, are widely used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems but have a high global warming potential (GWP). The regulation aims to: ✅ Reduce HFC Availability: Starting next year, there will be a significant reduction in the amount of HFCs that can be placed on the market, forcing the industry to shift towards more ecological alternatives. ✅ Prohibit the Use of Fluorinated Refrigerants: The regulation imposes strict restrictions on the use of HFCs in new products and refrigeration systems, thus promoting the use of natural cooling technologies and those with a low impact on the climate. ✅ Promote Sustainability in the Food Supply Chain: Another important goal is to achieve a more sustainable food supply chain by reducing the carbon footprint of refrigeration systems used in this sector. 🔵 Implications for Industry and Consumers The adoption of the new F-Gas Regulation will have significant implications for both the refrigeration industry and consumers. The State of Colorado just released its updated Greenhouse Gas Pollution Reduction Roadmap! Many companies measure and lead their climate work based on yearly greenhouse gas (GHG) calculations. The GHG calculations usually comprehensively include the industrial and energy related emissions but leave out all – or major parts of – the land-based emissions from primary production and the biogenic carbon cycle (FLAG emissions). Land-based emissions have been challenging to include as the nature-based environments and biogenic carbon cycles are complex and applicable guidance and data sources to estimate such emissions did not previously exist. Given that land-based emissions are estimated to represent almost one quarter of the global GHG emissions, recent developments in both data sources and calculations standards are luckily enabling more comprehensive carbon footprint calculations.
