As more than 60 countries pledged on Dec. 5 to slash #cooling-related greenhouse gas #emissions by 2050, the UN Environment Programme released a report highlighting what it will take to turn such promises into reality. Here are 3 top takeaways for city leaders:

The Federal Highway Administration recently issued a final rule that requires state departments of transportation and metropolitan planning organizations to set declining greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets for transportation-related emissions on interstate highways and other major roads, and report progress on meeting their targets. Rekor’s mobility intelligence technology can track greenhouse gas and smog scores in real-time, meeting the aspirations of this proposed rule. EPA recently finalized new standards for regulating greenhouse gases from power plants. In new analysis, we assess what the new rules mean for electric power GHG and conventional pollutant emissions into the next decade. The rules represent the largest EPA climate regulation to date in the electric power sector, cutting CO2 emissions by 155 to 241 million metric tons compared to no new regulations in 2035, or a 28-48% reduction. The rules also further accelerate declines in conventional pollutant emissions levels, leading to a 93-94% reduction in SO2 emissions and a 75-85% reduction in NOx emissions compared to 2022 levels. These reductions occur in both overburdened fence-line communities and beyond. But existing natural gas plants are not covered by the rules, and EPA will need to figure out how to reduce the associated GHG emissions and conventional pollutant emissions that continue to disproportionately affect fence-line communities. What does the data say about emissions? Patterns in the air concentration measurements taken around a site can tell a story about important emission sources and identify interesting characteristics. We can learn if an emission source is on or offsite, whether it is coming from an elevated source (such as a flare stack), or if there are topography influences.
