There's still time to register for 'Breaking Down Barriers - Women In Sport' on 21 May, which promises to be a special evening with an excellent panel who will discuss the gender equity barriers faced by women in sport, the role that diversity & inclusion is playing and will play to overcome them and the barriers that are being smashed 🏏 ⚽ 🏈 🏆 This #IFSEA event will be a thought-provoking exploration of the challenges and triumphs of women in sports, from pay equity to the impact of social media. Our panel includes Cindy Butts, the driving force behind the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC), Becky Grey, BBC Sport journalist and co-author of the BBC Elite British Sportswomen's Study 2024, which covered topics such as the cost of living, social media trolling, maternity in sport and disordered eating, Emma Dodds, a voice synonymous with top-tier sports broadcasting, and Sam Murray-Hinde, employment lawyer at Howard Kennedy LLP, with specialist expertise in the sports sector. RESEARCH - Women in Sport Kick like a girl: a qualitative exploration into community perspectives surrounding the Women’s Australian Football League Mackenzie Glazbrook, Stephanie Newton Webb, and Sarven Savia McLinton, Sport in Society, (February 2024), A new study from the University of South Australia investigated the factors that can be barriers or motivators to support for women’s participation in Australian Rules Football, an historically male-dominated sport. Despite the present study demonstrating support for the AFLW, the prevalence of negative attitudes was still evident, including both overt and subtle gender inequality. Traditional gender ideology within the context of football continue to inhibit the growth of women's football, reinforcing the stereotypical ideals that suggest women are inferior athletes. Recognising the barriers and motivators for both women’s and men’s football consumption emphasises the importance of implementing unique marketing strategies for each league. To continue the promotion and success of the AFLW, it is essential to understand the attitudes surrounding support for women’s football and attempt to bridge the gap between general support and active engagement. I've experienced firsthand the power of perseverance. Every decision made on the field is not just about enforcing the laws of the game but also about showcasing craft, leadership and integrity. It's about proving that gender doesn't determine competence, and that diversity only enriches the game we all love. Receiving the 2024 ACT Woman of the Year Special Commendation award is not just a personal achievement but a symbol of progress and empowerment. It's a reminder that every challenge conquered paves the way for a more inclusive and equitable future. It's a testament to the strength and resilience of women in sports, and a call to action to continue pushing boundaries and inspiring the next generation. Some good news for women’s economic equality. The latest Financy Women’s Index rose by two per cent to 78.1 points in the September quarter, the best gain in two years. Economic inequality is a profound injustice that continues to plague our society, but we are taking action. The inclusion of women-owned businesses, women professionals, and women property practitioners in the property sector and its sub-sectors is not just important—it is crucial for the progress of our country. The National Strategic Plan on GBVF Pillar 5, focusing on Economic Power, is mandated to address these challenges, with Outcome 5.1 specifically advocating for women’s economic empowerment. In the space of 4 years, from 2017 to 2021, the percentage of Australian girls and young women who felt female politicians were treated unfairly rose dramatically from 56 to 73% for 18-21-year-olds and 78% for 22-25-year-olds, according to Plan International Australia’s major research project. How women are treated in politics and the parliamentary system is a large part of the overall problem of low trust in government. And women in the political system are powerful agents of change. That’s why we work to support them across party lines to transform the experience of parliament for the participation and flourishing of women and all people who enter parliament. In late 2023 Next25 facilitated our second highly successful “Improving Democracy: Transforming Parliament for Women” program with NSW women politicians. “It was a breath of air to have a supported and facilitated space to reflect on the broad challenges of our work and to have a platform for collective action. I would not have taken the time or committed the energy to this task without a program like Next25 that was so strongly recommended by my peers.” - Anon, NSW Greens Next25 is energised to kick off 2024 by reconvening with the women who participated in the 2022 and 2023 programs to support them in further progressing their interventions and lay the groundwork for more women and men to join them in 2024.
