The University of Kentucky Sports Medicine Research Institute (SMRI) has developed a new approach to the research, health and safety of equestrian sports. In a published concept paper, Michaela Keener, M.S., and Kimberly Tumlin, Ph.D., discuss their new approach called the Triple-E Model. It expands on the One Health model that dates back to ancient Greece. The One Health model is a concept that recognizes the interconnection between humans, animals and the environment. Congratulations to Suzanne Beale, Research Occupation Hand Therapist, Chris McGhee and the rest of the team at HaPPeN plus our international collaborators Gilad Rotem, Liron Duraku MD Ph.D., Mark van der Oest, on this latest publication. The SCOPING study was evaluating a Series of Clinical Observational Parameters Indicative of Nerve Regeneration. How much confidence do you place in Tinel's sign. Is the tender muscle squeeze sign predictive of motor recovery? Is the differential Tinel a useful sign? Can thermographic imaging demonstrate normalisation of temperature differentials as autonomic recovery progresses in the hand....and does autonomic recovery predict sensory recovery? All this and more in this pilot paper accepted for PRS global Open. Below is a series of clinical thermal images from injury to 6 months after repair demonstrating normalisation of cutaneous temperature differentials.

It is a pleasure to share this latest paper of ours, published ahead of print in the prestigious journal of the American College of Sports Medicine after a successful collaboration between Semmelweis University and HUN-REN SZTAKI (Institute for Computer Science and Control). I hold this paper especially dear because it conveys a clear message, which has been evident all along: regular physical activity and sports keep you young and healthy, and even your routine blood tests contain this information! First, we took the publicly available NHANES and our athletic database at Semmelweis University containing routine blood test data. We trained a set of ML-based models to predict the subjects' age from blood test parameters alone or with the addition of some body measurements. Even though the examined subjects were young adults, we have shown that - using only blood test parameters - athletes seem significantly younger than chronological age-matched controls. This manifests in a lower age acceleration. I wonder how pronounced these results would have been if we had had access to a large database with master and veteran athletes! Also, a higher muscle volume inversely correlates with age acceleration, and a higher body fat percentage correlates positively with a higher age acceleration in athletes! I guess it is time to hit the gym, fields, and track and skip those late-night snacks, folks! ☝ Let's keep ourselves young and healthy!

As we get closer to the 2024 American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Annual Meeting from Tuesday, May 28 to Friday, May 31, 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts we will be presenting a series of publications via our social media platforms that focus on Physiology and Sports Medicine research utilizing the OxiplexTS near-infrared, non-invasive tissue oximeter. ISS will be exhibiting at ACSM 2024 in Boston, booth # 205. Stop by our booth as we'll have our OxiplexTS with us! Our second post takes a deep dive into the critical metrics for athlete performance: critical power (CP), maximal lactate steady state (MLSS), and the respiratory compensation point (RCP). And examined local thresholds through breakpoints in muscle deoxygenation (m[HHb]BP) and muscle activity (iEMGBP).
