Radical Health Festival: A Glimpse into Tomorrow’s Medicine, Today Mental Health Television Network (MHTN) The recent Radical Health Festival Helsinki, Finland was a truly eye-opening experience for Gareth Presch. Patricia Wu discuss how it’s no secret that Finland is renowned for being the happiest country in the world, but it seems their innovative approach to healthcare is another reason to celebrate. One of the most exciting takeaways from the festival was the focus on preventative care. Rather than simply treating illnesses after they arise, healthcare professionals are increasingly focusing on preventing them altogether. Imagine a world where we could avoid getting sick in the first place! Another fascinating development is the concept of “healthcare at home.” This innovative approach would allow patients to receive diagnoses and treatments from the comfort of their own homes, potentially revolutionizing the way we access medical care. Mental health was also a prominent topic at the festival. With mental illness on the rise, particularly among young people, there is a growing emphasis on addressing this critical issue. The festival explored various strategies for supporting mental health, including programs aimed at helping school children cope with stress and anxiety. Women’s health was another area that garnered significant attention. It’s a startling fact that only 2% of healthcare funding is currently allocated to women’s health. This is a major issue that needs to be addressed, and the festival sparked a renewed commitment to advocating for greater investment in this area. The Radical Health Festival provided a glimpse into a future where healthcare is more accessible, preventative, and personalized. The innovations and discussions that took place have ignited hope for a brighter and healthier future for all. The next few years are a crucial time for the global eye health community and its partners in health care, government, and other sectors to consider the successes and challenges encountered in the past two decades, and at the same time to chart a way forward for the upcoming decades. The call is for a collective effort at national and sub-national levels to drive change, with the WHO Guide to Action as a tool for governments and the eye health sector to integrate eye health at all levels of healthcare. 3️⃣ 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥: Recognizing that almost everyone will face eye health issues, the strategy aims to reduce stigma and activate universal demand. Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) We held our latest Women's Health Symposium at SHP Health on Tuesday 6th February where one of our topics was REDs. REDs, or Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, is a condition characterised by insufficient energy intake to meet the body's demands during exercise and essential daily functions like growth, respiration, and digestion. We had the brilliant Joanne Penner (MSc PhD) as a guest speaker to talk to us about this topic. Joanne spoke about what REDs is, how it comes about (the pressures and causes), and how it can then be managed, treated and prevented. During Joanne's talk she discussed many useful resources that can be used by clinicians and by our patients. New data show that nearly one third (31%) of adults worldwide, approximately 1.8 billion people, did not meet the recommended levels of physical activity in 2022. The findings point to a worrying trend of physical inactivity among adults, which has increased by about 5 percentage points between 2010 and 2022. If the trend continues, levels of inactivity are projected to further rise to 35% by 2030, and the world is currently off track from meeting the global target to reduce physical inactivity by 2030. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults have 150 minutes of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity, or equivalent, per week. Physical inactivity puts adults at greater risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes, type 2 diabetes, dementia and cancers such as breast and colon. #obesity #cancer #diabetes #nodaysoff https://lnkd.in/evfx2dgN

After numerous discussions with colleagues on the interconnection between health and social determinants and their impact on ageing well (notably the complex cycle where a GP diagnosis is needed to access benefits, especially as conditions worsen), there emerged a consensus on the need to establish a Special Interest Group (SIG). This group would not be condition-specific but would broadly address both health and social issues which impact ageing brain health. https://lnkd.in/eGxUPPwc With a special emphasis on individuals with protected characteristics and highly diverse communities, the aim is to enhance inclusion in research for those consistently underrepresented. We hope to do this by sharing knowledge and reflecting on all the systems which may hinder representation, including our own internal research processes.
