On Tuesday 14 November 2023, Victoria University in collaboration with Sportscover hosted the 8th National Sport Integrity Forum (NSIF), taking a deep-dive into challenges posed by sports betting. This year’s NSIF was titled: ‘Betting your bottom dollar, against the odds?’ The forum featured experts in the industry discussing regulation, legal and illegal betting, match fixing, the impact on gambling advertising on young people and live-streaming community-level sports events. The panellists emphasised the need for better awareness of the associated risks, and the importance of (preventative) education and better national alignment of policies and regulation. In a collective call to action the panellists advocated the creation of a national sports-wagering scheme, progressing harm minimisation measures, achieving consistent regulatory frameworks, promoting real-time information sharing, addressing gaps in education for athletes at all levels, and making progress in national legislation to align with international best practices. A focus on feminist theory/ies in relation to sport governance is an absolutely essential intervention. This is all the more important a) in addressing the systemic discriminatory factors in sport governance [sport governance, after all, is a cradle of what the late Dr bell hooks described as the imperialist capitalist white supremacist cisheteropatriarchy], and b) in the current context, where sport governance as a whole is faced with polarizing, reductive, dehumanizing and deeply problematic discourses.

New research by UTS’s own Daryl Adair, and Keith Parry (Bournemouth University), Connor MacDonald and Jamie Cleland (University of South Australia) demonstrates that spectator racism is still a huge issue in Australia’s three major football codes – AFL, NRL and A-League Men. 🏉 “We found sobering evidence of the persistence of racism within these spectator communities, despite efforts by sports to combat it: 50% of AFL fans, 36% of NRL spectators and 27% of A-League Men fans had witnessed racist behaviour during their lifetimes.” ⚽ “Prime responsibility lies with white Australians who, after all, are generally privileged to not be objects of racial bigotry. Therefore, white sports fans who reject the ideology of white supremacy, like racist barracking at a game, have the opportunity to demonstrate a sense of solidarity with those who have been the subject of abuse.” 📢 “What is urgently needed, though, is a greater commitment by fans, especially white fans, to report racism when they observe it. ‼️ Unacceptable Behavior at High School Sporting Events – It’s Still Happening This is supposed to be EDUCATION-BASED SPORTS. Yet, the NFHS has heard reports of coaches and student-athletes displaying unsportsmanlike conduct at games. HS sports need to be DIFFERENT than the college and professional levels, where players and coaches tend to complain about calls. HS sports are different than non-school youth travel teams, where the emphasis is on individual accomplishments and winning. In a 2023 survey by the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO), 68 percent of respondents said sportsmanship is getting worse – six years earlier in a similar survey 57 percent indicated behavior was getting worse. And 72 percent of the officials indicated they are treated unfairly by coaches. We are definitely going in the wrong direction! We have to do better. We must do better. Enough is Enough. BEYOND THE IMAGINATION The issue of violence in Sierra Leone football is growing to the extent that seems the FA waiting for the worst to happen before action is taken. Most of the violence in the game has recently been triggered by bad officiating and neither the Sierra Leone Football Association nor the Sierra Leone National Referee Association taking robust action to mitigate the issue and it's evolving. The FA once established a Referee Committee that is to preside over referee matters and here we are bad officiating clasping the game to ransom. Provide a safe and conducive atmosphere for the game. However, football in Sierra Leone lacks modern policies and fair enactment of the archaic statutes therefore its effect is seen as escalating. The Northeast Athletics Association is running out of leadership and some people within the cycle are happy because it's not them and nothing will progress, this action will hinder the gain the region has made over the years in terms of providing talented athletes at the same time, the athletes will pay the greatest consequences. More so, the National Athletics leadership strives to settle this impasse as faced with puritanical restraints, there is still to offer, like following the rules entrenched in your constitution fairly and genuinely for the good of the sport, region, and the lads that have chosen athletics as a career path. To the athletes in the Northeast, don't involve yourselves in the administration politics. This is about nationalism over self, and until we are ready to put country above all else, we will remain stagnating. By the time our administrators are genuine in their performance of their responsibilities, the good for the sports in the country.
