Co-founder & CEO at Hugging Face

This isn’t a goal of ours because we have plenty of money in the bank but quite excited to see that Hugging Face is profitable these days, with 220 team members and most of our platform being free (like model hosting) and open-source for the community! Especially noteworthy at a time when most AI startups wouldn’t survive a year or two without VC money. Great job team!

AI companies who have figured out how to sell consistently and realiably into the enterprise aren’t bothered about VC money. They have figured out how to make money and save clients money. Those are the ones that will survive long term. All others who haven’t figured it out — high profile or not , 100s of millions raised or more, will die out in firehose sales, mercy buyouts, chicken-out “aquihire” and other uneventful forms of “exits”. Or basically “we knew from started we were fawked, now we actually are”

In a crowded field of over-promising and way-under-delivering, Huggingface provides excellent paid services and community-defining freely available services - no small feat. My (proverbial) hat is off to you guys.

I would probably not survive with VC money. I did not last time I was VC-funded around 2006. But now, self-funded since 2010, I've been profitable most of the time, sold my previous company, and also have plenty of money in the bank. My ratio cash reserves / employee is probably one of the highest in the industry (in the 7 digits).

This is really great to hear, especially given all the investment your team makes with serving the HF Hub and all the infrastructure it must take the run that. Congratulations on building a well-run and impressive company.

Open-source can be surprisingly profitable, and I wish more startups would recognize that giving away 90% of their product for free and charging for the remaining 10% can be really effective for improving the product, gaining market share, and, yes, making a profit!

Huggingface deserves all the success! what HF has done for open-source is nothing short of extraordinary.

Great to see Hugging Face doing so well with a profitable and community-focused approach. Kudos to the team for setting a great example in the AI space!

I'm sorry to tell you this Clem , but most HF compute cost comes from my usage of the free inference API 👉👈
