At the EIT RawMaterials summit, we discussed this week how to build a resilient and sustainable raw materials supply chain to secure the green and digital transition of the European economy. On behalf of CLEPA - European Association of Automotive Suppliers, I could address the challenges that the automotive supply industry faces to secure a responsible supply chain and hear more about standardisation efforts in the raw materials sector. Industry initiatives in the automotive industry are making progress (e.g. Responsible Supply Chain Initiative, Drive Sustainability, Drive+) to increase collaboration to foster transparency and due diligence, but the supply chain is deep and complex. Individual companies often lack visibility or leverage to control what’s happening in the many tiers between mine and their own operations. Further harmonization is needed, as well as efforts to improve regulatory coherence. If too much time goes lost in reporting, filling out supplier surveys, signing code of conducts and worrying about liability risks, too little time will remain for actual stakeholder engagement and improvements on the ground. Thank you Antonia Mihaylova, Knut Ansgar Hirsch, Aleksandra Cholewa, Assheton Stewart Carter for sharing about your great work to ensure a responsible raw materials supply chain.
