This #WorldEnvironmentDay is especially relevant to the team at ChannelSight. The 2024 theme #GenerationRestoration brings awareness on how to reverse land degradation, halt desertification and build drought resilience, which resonates with our team as we consider how we can do our part. By joining forces, governments, businesses, civil society and individuals can give nature a helping hand and forge a more sustainable world for generations to come. The Nature Trust, co-founded by our CEO & Co-founder John Beckett, was developed to restore Ireland’s native forests and peatlands, while enabling others to follow our lead by planting native woodlands across Ireland. There is no lack of ambition: the goal of planting or rehabilitating 1% of the land area of Ireland (over 200,000 acres), at a cost of well over €1bn (in today’s money) over the next 20 years, but this is still only scratching the surface of the climate and biodiversity crises. A staggering 40 percent of the world’s population is impacted by land degradation, and if remained unchecked, could reduce global food productivity by 12 percent, causing food prices to soar by up to 30 percent by 2040. Freshwater ecosystems like rivers, lakes and wetlands cover less than 1% of the planet’s surface. But they play an outsized role in sustaining the environmental and economic systems on which people and nature depend.  Wetlands are declining faster than tropical forests. Globally, we’ve lost 2/3rds since 1900. For too long, we have ignored and undervalued the unique qualities of freshwater ecosystems. To conserve them requires a new approach. Earth Day 2024 just became an unforgettable milestone in our quest for environmental preservation! On April 22, CalTrout received a $6 million grant from NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to restore the Elk River watershed. 🌎 Huge thanks to NOAA for their generous support, and to Lake County News for spotlighting this momentous occasion! 💧 Together, we are building a brighter, more sustainable future for both fish and people. Darren Mierau, North Coast Regional Director at CalTrout, sums up the importance of funding: "The Elk River has taken a beating over the years due to shortsighted land use decisions. This is the first step in a multi-phase project to help bring [the Elk River watershed] back into balance so that agricultural activity can continue with fewer impacts on water quality and wildlife. The Boreal Forest is one of the largest land-based solutions for preserving biodiversity and fighting climate change. Even though the boreal faced tough challenges – especially from wildfire – in 2023, there is still much to celebrate in conserving this vital landscape this past year.
