Monty Cantsin and I just got back from a trip to Cuba, and I find myself covered in chiggers. They bite me all day and night, all over, non-stop. It’s making me reconsider my plan for posterity (the 6th point of my 10-Point-Program), to breed generations of lice on my head, eventually sending them off into the world. My plan was to invite everyone to the release party, in which a nurse would pour on the Nix to send the lice running off my head, down my body, and into the crowd. Goodbye children! Now I must reconsider because I’m itchy all over and it’s rather unpleasant. Or maybe I can just throw my release party now, but for chiggers instead of lice children. I’ve already given them so much of my flesh and blood. I would send out invites and have caterers bring some ham and beans, as they know how much I love ham and beans. Then I’ll play Frank Sinatra’s New York, New York, and give the kids permission to keep dancing, while I sing it to them. “You kids stayin’ outta trouble? Make some now!” I’ll then tip the caterer generously. My chiggers would mingle among the guests and the crowd would swoon, wiping their eyes in genuine gratitude. The problem is that the chiggers are nearly invisible to the human eye, so the party wouldn’t be very spectacular, compared to a lice release party. The event would be over in a mere 10 minutes, with only a few attendees paying attention. But at least the food would be delicious, and the catering costs wouldn’t be as high. #plan #posterity #program #party #permission #problem

Volunteer It’s a powerful word. The 🎆impact🎇 is more powerful. Those who volunteer for unpaid work give time in exchange of a benefit to the greater good. On Saturdays in early summer, I volunteer — along with 80-100 other great people — to help run a youth swim meet. Officials, timers, ready bench, concessions… the positions are plentiful. Also plentiful (with kids & adults): ✅ Smiles ✅ Sportsmanship ✅ Friendships ✅ Fun Sometimes I’m not sure who has more fun — the kids or adults. Without the volunteers, the swimmeet — and dozens like it in our area — simply wouldn’t happen. Without volunteers, so many organizations that do great work for other would not exist at the level they do today - or at all. If you have time, consider sharing a little of it with others. If you have a skill or passion, even better! How (and where) do you share your time? Where else would you want to?

TCK Minute with Emily! Many TCK’s will say they’ve been there. Questions come from all directions, and they make us make faces…internally and at times, much to our dismay, externally. Do you ride an elephant to school? What color is your grass? Do you eat worms? Not joking, I was asked 2-3 of these more than once while growing up. In responding to one pen-pal letter, I took great delight in crafting clever answers, saying that our grass was actually purple, hippos were our main mode of transport, and worms were our favorite ice cream topping. It was indeed of the Lord that my parents intervened before the postman collected it! All that to say, when talking to a TCK or TCA (third-culture adult), there are dreaded questions and then there are questions that convey you have time to listen and truly want to know our experiences. TCKs know the difference and more often than not, we like all the normal questions that you would ask any other kid. There is also always grace for the silly ones (but if we make a face, we ask for grace in return). YOU DID A GREAT JOB! I spent this afternoon volunteering at Girl Child's elementary school for their annual Field Day. Hoop tosses, tug-of-war, sack races, etc. I was in charge of the cornhole station. Many of the kids were shy or hesitant, and became frustrated if the first toss wasn't a point. So, I started cheering them on. "Great job, buddy!" "Way to go, girlfriend!" "You did great! Go try again!" If they made a hit, I whooped and hollered. Did a little victory dance. Ran over and gave them a high-five. Pointed out their success to their teacher. The kids bloomed. They smiled. They laughed. They came back for more high-fives. They came back to try again. They cheered themselves and each other on. And standing there under the hot Florida sun cheering and dancing and whooping, I realized something: Everyone likes to be told they're doing a good job. (Okay, maybe not everyone. But, like, ... almost everyone.) Sometimes, we only cheer each other on when we really knock it out of the park. When we're 11 out of 10. Everything else is "doing the job." Truth, but I think a word of encouragement--or a victory high-five--when someone learns something new or is clearly trying to be better can help keep them motivated.
