Last Thursday, I posted about how *not* to sabotage your own post/content rising up the Hacker News rankings. At the time, something really bothered me. 😑 I honestly couldn't remember how many hours a post can live on the front page of Hacker News before an auto-decay feature kicks in and kicks it off the front page. (After dropping off the front page, posts usually enter free fall and drop down hundreds of rankings in hours or even minutes.) 🔎 I found a blog post by someone who reverse-engineered the HN algo back in 2017. There, they mention automatic down-ranking kicking in at 15 hours. And they have a nifty graph (although it's unreadable in the early hours). Anyway, I'd be surprised if as the readership numbers have gone up over the years, this window didn't get smaller after 2017. UPDATE: Apr. 25, 2024, 2:17 p.m. EDT Reddit is back up and fully operational. The company wrote that the “incident has been resolved” shortly before 2 p.m. ET. Reddit was down for lots of users on Thursday, April 25. The site confirmed it was experiencing a back end issue. The company wrote Thursday afternoon: “An issue with a Reddit backend has impacted many users on our site. We are looking into the cause.” So if you’re getting something like a 502 bad gateway error message, that’s the reason. When Mashable tried to load the site on desktop a bit after 1 p.m. ET we got a typical, “Oops, something went wrong, please try again later.” Mashable Light Speed User reports of issues began to spike upwards on Down Detector starting at about 20 minutes past noon, eastern time. The issue should, hopefully, not be long lasting. 🗺️ This Tool Shows Some Telegram Users’ Approximate Physical Location A recently launched tool allows anyone to search a specific set of coordinates for Telegram users that have a certain setting enabled, and then plot their approximate physical location on a map. The tool, dubbed “Close-Circuit Telegram Vision” or CCTV, piggybacks off an intended feature of Telegram called “Find People Nearby” which is disabled by default. The typical purpose of that feature is to find other Telegram users nearby to the current user’s physical location. The new tool, meanwhile, lets anyone search globally for people who have the setting turned on. The news presents a recontextualization of data which users may consent to being available in one context, but which is now being presented in another. The project’s GitHub page says “users can monitor others in real-time for logistics or safety, redefining how we navigate our surroundings.” Telegram’s anonymously run press team account told that “The optional feature 'People Nearby' was created specifically for people who want to broadcast their location to others. It is always disabled by default.” “The ‘coordinates’ the Github tool displays are not user locations—the data is approximated to 800m on the server, and only exists for users who explicitly chose to broadcast their location. Any Telegram app can give you access to the same data,” the message added. The ordinary Telegram app does not allow people to search globally for other users, though. People who have the “Find People Nearby” feature turned on may assume they are only discoverable to other Telegram users who are in the same local vicinity as them. Telegram’s FAQ says that the feature “allows Telegram users to explore local groups, find friends to chat with in their area, or quickly exchange contacts with people who are close.” CCTV works uses the Telegram API related to Find People Nearby. “As an input it takes custom latitude and longitude hence I can put any data (even no need to perform a GPS spoofing).
