Share resources - make lists of job boards, networking events, or skill-building courses. 5. Leverage your network - Introduce job seekers to potential connections. My head is spinning with all of the recent media layoffs and walkouts. While the evolving media landscape directly impacts my work, it also deeply affects society. Social media, media management chasing clicks, and shrinking ad dollars have all contributed to confusing the public about the critical role true journalism plays in our society. Journalists (and I want to emphasize that everyone with a keyboard or mic is not a journalist) deliver straightforward information that helps us to enforce accountability. They expose corruption and abuse. We need them today more than ever. I fear a future that relies on trash outlets that would not know a fact if it hit them in the head and pure AI content. We cannot afford to believe this is someone else's problem, it is OUR problem. And please, if you can spread the word far and wide to support those impacted by layoffs to find a place to contribute their talents.

I have noticed that the tech layoff trend was not left in 2023… if you have been laid off in 2024, I see you—I've been there too! I've experienced all the emotions you're likely feeling now: shock, anger, fear, and more. I've written and rewritten my resume, spent hours scouring LinkedIn, and applied for numerous jobs, but the most impactful thing I've done in these three months is NETWORK. Since I was laid off, over 50 generous individuals have opened their calendars to me, making me feel validated and supported during this uncertain time. I NEED A JOB, plain and simple and most importantly - TO THE POINT! It's been 4 LONG months since being laid off and with each passing day, it's becoming harder to be "seen". As the number of layoffs are increasing, it seems. I've done everything I know to do - network, apply for jobs, revamp my resume, change the wording on my LinkedIn profile to be more available for AI purposes, reach out to recruiters and a multitude of other things. Being humble is not hard for me, I am willing to work outside of my field - doing whatever it takes - just to be an employed individual in our society. I know I'm not the only individual facing this dilemma, and for the ones still facing this, I understand the heartbreak and you are not alone. With layoffs affecting many companies and employees, (myself included) where entire departments can be eliminated. It's a little disappointing that no one offers to hire the department. I can show you a list of individuals, who have worked together professionally for years and delivered worth to the business. Remember when departments are let go it's not about performance, or KPI. It's about the growing culture of a business and whether it's that department is included in the new company direction. Honestly, getting back into the job hunt. I wasn't prepared for how much I would miss the standups, retros, and grooming with one of the best teams I have had the pleasure of working with. To all the recruiters and future employers. if your looking for an excellent scrum master, product owner, or remarkable engineering talent. I know quite a few that I would love to work with again, will go the extra mile, and make you laugh harder than you have at work in a long time.

It can make a huge difference just knowing that someone out there cares. It's been 214 days since I was laid off suddenly from a job that I loved. 214 days of dreaming about what the future holds. 214 days without the team and organization I believed in. 214 days of scouring job boards, hopefully applying and often being met with radio silence. 214 days of DMs reaching out for feedback and insight, often leading to no replies and getting left on read. 214 days of checking portals to find that applications are still in an endless cycle of "review". There are days where it feels like I'm throwing CVs into a black hole, and when you do get a reply, it's usually a canned robo-response. "We decided to move forward with other candidates." "We wish you the best in your search." "We know this isn't the news you wanted to hear." This is a gentle reminder that there are hundreds of incredibly talented people in your network quietly looking for work in a job market that is wilder than any I've ever seen before. It's also a sober call to remember that in tech, or any industry for that matter, layoffs can happen to anyone. Don't take good work for granted. Tell your teammates you're thankful for them, and in all that you do strive to remain grateful - even when things get boring. Good work is a gift, truly. Take time to reach out to your friends who are looking for their next gig. Ask how they're doing. Check up on their mental health. Send articles and leads. And memes. Meet up for coffee, and if they ask for help do the best you can to point them in the right direction. It takes a village, and after all, we're all in this together. 🙏
