My thoughts on the tool of AI: Computers generate. Humans create. Consumers can decide which they prefer. And either is a fine choice. But it is on the creator to be better, more aesthetically pleasing, than the generator. AI is raising the bar, not lowering it

While it's inarguable that the public has the right to decide, one of the fundamental purposes of copyright is to give humans an incentive to create. Given the volume of content that these engines are capable of generating (largely taught by uncompensated copyright holders), I can see a world where human creators will be at a major disadvantage. How "discoverable" will they be - even if their content is "better" (whatever that means)? Not attaching any value judgement because we're talking the consumer's right to decide that to which s/he listens. At the same time, should we ignore the fundamental purpose of copyright? Should we ignore the fact that the "creative" process of songwriting is much more labor-intensive (by magnitudes) for a human than it is for an AI Engine? AI-generated songwriting is an assembly line (not in the sense of producing identical output, but in enabling the production of significantly MORE output). Given the inherent disadvantage to humans, hard to fathom that young, creative people will have much incentive to enter the craft. What do you reckon? Again, no value judgment, but I do believe that it's a complicated issue that demands consideration of many factors - not just consumer choice.

Two ways to mine coal: Machine or man. Is either a fine choice? <smile>

saw an interesting take the other day that said the sheer amount of music being created by AI, after being trained on copyrighted music, makes it inevitable that at some point copyrights will be infringed, resulting in lawsuits. (unless, of course, AI companies lobby successfully to have copyright laws changed.) another option is for AI companies to place that responsibility on those who would license and use their music. in other words, if we infringe on a copyright, you're the one who gets sued. neither is a rosy scenario.

I was inspired from a recent podcast interview with Holly Herndon who built and trained generative models herself using her own IP. Afterwards I couldn’t help but to daydream about multiple self-trained models from artists interacting with one another in a sort of next-generation jazz performance. Creators gunna create … tools change.

so true! I always say that AI is a great tool but it is only a tool. Yes, more sophisticated and complex but still a tool.
