BASF's Global Production Sites Achieve ISCC+ Certification July 23, 2024 – BASF's global major production sites for acrylics, alcohols, ethylene glycols, and acetate products have achieved ISCC+ certification, further supporting customers in reaching their sustainability goals and visions. This initiative enables over 60 products within BASF's portfolio to encompass a range of sustainability attributes. In addition to high-quality, reliable "classic" products, a significant portion of the portfolio now offers options with diverse sustainability attributes: "Low Carbon Footprint" and "Zero Carbon Footprint" products lead in reducing the carbon footprint, helping customers achieve their greenhouse gas reduction targets. "Bio-based" products are partly made from biomass and can be tracked via carbon-14 (C14). Ccycled® products use chemically recycled plastic waste or scrap tires as raw materials, supporting the circular economy. "Manufactured Using Green Energy" products highlight BASF's commitment to further reducing the environmental impact of the production process through renewable energy.

Did you know that most of the #plastics we use in daily life are produced with fossil fuels? A more sustainable solution exists. Polyethylene furanoate (PEF) plastics use biomass instead of crude oil as a feedstock, leading to a 75% reduction in relative lifecycle emissions. They are also easy to recycle and cost-competitive to traditional plastics. However, PEF currently makes up less than 1% of plastics, but can achieve scale with more efficient production methods. Great insightful article on plastic production by Gerben Hieminga, Edse Dantuma and Coco Ke Zhang TLDR; plastics can be made without fossil fuels, either bio (which requires settling disputes on avoided emissions / definition of green) or synthetically (green power -> hydrogen -> syngas -> methanol -> longer molecules). While less "efficient" and thus more expensive than oil-based, impact on consumer prices should not be massive. Lets get the required regulation in place to support this transition. Strategies to Reduce the Global Carbon Footprint of Plastics (1) Bio-based plastics: fossil-based plastics are gradually substituted by biobased plastics until a complete phase-out of fossil-based plastics by 2050. While bio-based plastics can be derived from a variety of feedstock, modelled here are corn and sugarcane given their dominance in current market . (2) Renewable energy: the energy mix of plastics supply chain is gradually decarbonised and reaches 100% renewables (i.e. wind power and biogas) by 2050. Emissions under the current energy mix are modelled as comparison. (3) Recycling: recycling rates of EoL plastics gradually increase and reach 100% by 2050. In comparison, we also model the emissions under a projected EoL management mix scenario and a 100% incineration/composting scenario. (4) Reducing demand growth: the current annual growth rate of global plastics demand, which is 4%, is reduced to 2%. 🌟 Petrogenium visited the Plastics Recyclers Europe Recycling Show Europe last week (19 June) right here in Amsterdam. Exciting talks from Neste and Axens shed light on developments in mixed plastics and waste recycling. 🔄 We also had the chance to connect with people at various stands. 🔍 A lot of focus and commitment on the chemical recycling of contaminated waste streams that are often not suitable for mechanical recycling. Processes like pyrolysis can afford recycled oils that can be used in stream crackers to produce new feedstocks for polymers. However pyrolysis, just like gasification and hydrothermal liquefaction of wastes, are never quite as easy or straightforward in practice. Chemical waste recycling often has technical challenges such as fouling, plugging, achieving stable and continuous process conditions and more. 🔬 Petrogenium can assist in debottlenecking a process and increasing unit availability by technology and engineering reviews of existing processes with tangible, actionable recommendations on process improvements.
