In the closing chapter of his book Principles, Ray Dalio warns readers that none of his advice will help an organization if it doesn’t have proper governance, which he describes as an “oversight system that removes the people and processes if they aren’t working well.” An oversight system provides checks and balances of power, to ensure that the interests or agendas of one particular person or group is never placed before the needs of the community and business as a whole. It makes sense that Dalio believes so strongly in checks and balances. Without them, power gets concentrated at the top, truth and transparency cannot survive, and people no longer trust the system. A power structure without checks and balances results in tyranny, whether it involves citizens of a country or employees in an organization. According to this doctrine, the primary responsibility of a business is to increase its profits, as long as it stays within the rules of the game, meaning it should engage in fair competition without deception or fraud. Friedman's idea was that the main job of a business is to make money for its shareholders. Key Points of the Friedman Doctrine: 1. Friedman believed that a company's main goal should be to maximize profits for its shareholders. 2. Businesses should focus on economic efficiency and leave social issues to the government and non-profits. 3. Companies should compete fairly and ethically. Why the Friedman Doctrine Doesn't Fit Today 1. Today, businesses are expected to consider the interests of not just shareholders, but also employees, customers, suppliers, and the community. Focusing only on shareholders is seen as outdated. 2. Investors and consumers now demand that companies address environmental, social, and governance issues. Ignoring these can hurt a company's reputation and financial performance. 3. Many companies voluntarily adopt policies to do social good, beyond what is legally required. This reflects a growing belief that businesses should help address societal issues. 4. Companies are now expected to think about long-term impacts on society and the environment, not just short term profits. This approach can lead to sustainable success. 5. The global nature of business means that companies' actions have wide reaching effects. Issues like supply chain labor practices and environmental impact require a more comprehensive approach. While the Friedman Doctrine was influential in its time, its narrow focus on profit maximization doesn't align with today's world.
