Many companies and individuals today regard 'diversity' as an inherent good, no matter what, but they rarely define the term. We hear 'diversity is our strength' - and while certain types of diversity of thought and viewpoint can be helpful, one area where diversity can be detrimental to a company is the perception of the purpose or the mission of that company. Jamie Zawinski writes in response to why Netscape "coasted along" from 1996 - 1999: "Because the company stopped innovating. The company got big, and big companies just aren't creative. There exist counterexamples to this, but in general, great things are accomplished by small groups of people who are driven, who have unity of purpose. The more people involved, the slower and stupider their union is." The key phrase is "who have unity of purpose". If a company doesn't have unity of purpose, but rather has people pursuing a diversity of purposes, the company will simply not be cohesive. You'll have people running in multiple directions working at cross purposes to one another. These are impediments to success. Regarding Zawinski's comment about corporate union decreasing when numbers increase, this is the natural thing that will happen if HR and management folks don't bring their A-game. HR must recruit people on the same mission as the company, and management folks must foster communication and reinforce the company's mission and message on a regular basis. Why do growing or changing groups of people eventually exhibit disunity? Humans have a finite upper limit for the relationships they can master. Anthropologist Robin Dunbar's research indicates this number averages about 150 (https://lnkd.in/gKUJ5wzB). Disunity happens naturally as groups grow or change. Relationships and trust take time to become established. Good hiring and management practices can help mitigate this natural disunity and build teams that start out unified and become more unified over time. If you read this far hoping to see something about HOW to build and maintain unified teams, I am sorry to disappoint you. I don't have those kinds of answers. But sometimes simply being able to put your finger on a diagnosis can help lead you to the solution.
