Red pandas are normally solitary creatures until the breeding season when they can be found in pairs or small groups. They come together to continue the species and care for their young.  Are you more of a solitary or community creature?  Whatever your preference, there are certain times when we as humans can succeed better together! No matter where you live, there are many important reasons to participate with others: family, friends, education, advocacy, sports, outdoor activities, volunteering, and, of course, FUN! World Bee Day, a day dedicated to awareness and care for our friends the bees, is Monday, May 20th.   Since 2006, when reporting about bee colonies collapsing started to soar, we’ve been buzzing about the need to support our amazing pollinator friends. And, even though agriculture is driving record numbers of domesticated honeybees, native species continue to decline and need our support.   Can little kids help? Our emphatic answer is, “YES!” How? We can help kids take action in support of bees by including them in simple but impactful projects like creating bee "water fountains" or planting native, flowering plants for bees to pollinate.   We can also simply offer kids play activities that make them curious about bees—including pretending to be a bee! As humans, we are able to love what we are familiar with, and the more we can kindle a kinship with these remarkable creatures, the more kids will grow into powerful bee-allies. Best of all, that bee love will transfer to all of nature! We heard that Los Alamos became a Bee City, so we were wondering, what does that exactly means? 🐝 The title "Bee City" in the United States implies that the city has taken specific measures to protect and promote the health of bees and other pollinators. This title is granted by Bee City USA: a non-profit organization that works to encourage pollinator conservation in communities across the country. Being designated as a Bee City implies that the city has made concrete commitments, such as creating pollinator habitats, reducing the use of toxic pesticides, public education on the importance of pollinators, and adopting policies that favor their protection. In summary, a Bee City is committed to promoting and protecting the health of bees and other pollinators through concrete actions and public awareness of their importance to ecosystems and agriculture.
