Data tip: When computing primary care spending as % of total health care spending, it’s important to stratify by patient age. The younger the patient, the higher the % spending on primary care. So nobody should be surprised, for example, that % primary care spending is highest in Medicaid and lowest in Medicare—it’s all driven by patient age! Ditto comparisons between health systems and health plans. Uninterpretable without stratifying by patient age.
