Parents, educators, and computer programmers: should coding be *Mandatory* to learn in school? According to Code.org's "State of Computer Science Education," only 57.50% of public high schools offer foundational computer science courses. (This is not nearly high enough, in my opinion.) Only five states currently require kids to learn coding in school. Here's the summary of both sides of the argument... Yes: 🗣️ - Learning coding is like learning any other language. The earlier you start, the easier it will be. 🗣️ - Computer programming can be very lucrative and gives excellent upward mobility (especially to disenfranchised or marginalized groups.) 🗣️ - Similarly, the demand for computer programmers in today's market is still lopsided. 🗣️ - The world is becoming increasingly digitally native. It's important to learn how technology and the Internet work from the perspective of digital literacy. 🗣️ - Computer programming is not only about learning how to code; it also teaches kids how to think critically. 🗣️ - There's no better way to ride the technology waves if you want to become a tech entrepreneur. No: 🧐 - Not everyone wants to code. It still makes up a tiny portion of the overall workforce. Making it a requirement can blemish a student's GPA if it doesn't click with them. 🧐 - Jensen Huang (@Nvidia), Mark Cuban, and other tech leaders are making claims that AI will replace the need for software engineers by the time Gen Alpha is fully ready to enter the labor force. 🧐 - Similarly, Google DeepMind claims that AlphaCode 2 can code better than 85% of engineers and solve ~20% of all issues posted on GitHub. 🧐 - VC is heavily pouring money into the space to solve this issue. Founders Fund led a $175M investment in Cognition, a startup that recently launched an AI-powered coding assistant called Devin. (Now valued at $2B+) 🧐 - The implementation of requiring computer programming classes across the country is too hairy. There's a low supply of qualified talent to teach these classes and make learning effective. Programs must also be rolled out equally to rural vs urban, low-income vs higher-income, etc. This debate, of course, is a challenging one to solve, but something worth discussing.
