In summer 2022, three temporary wooden buildings - the Huber Pavilions - had to make way for a new building on the ETH Hönggerberg campus. The CircÛbi teaching project took advantage of this opportunity: under the co-leadership of two ETH professors, civil engineer Catherine De Wolf and architect Momoyo Kaijima, students collected the construction elements (or components) of the dismantled teaching buildings in order to reuse the materials according to the principle of the circular economy. #CircularEconomy #reuse #sustainablearchitecture

Addressing seasonal water shortages worsened by #climate variations and high evaporation, the plan includes capturing spring glacier melt and summer runoff to decrease reliance on #external water sources. It outlines a #hydrological network for efficient water collection, storage, and distribution, integrating community development spaces. Emphasizing #local materials for construction, the project aspires to enhance Spiti Valley's sustainability and #resilience, addressing both immediate water needs and long-term environmental sustainability. As I embarked on my Master's journey in Architecture, I found myself gravitating towards one topic in particular, one that I believe holds immense significance for the future of our field: sustainable architecture. Throughout my studies and extensive research, it has become abundantly clear that this domain demands not only the attention of architects but of humanity as a whole. The escalating heatwaves and the alarming shifts in climate patterns serve as stark reminders that we are at a critical juncture in our impact on the planet. If we continue on this trajectory, we risk jeopardizing our very existence. It is, therefore, imperative that we prioritize sustainable practices and incorporate them into the very fabric of our architectural ethos. This necessitates a multifaceted approach, encompassing: - Education and Awareness: Organizing workshops and seminars to disseminate knowledge about sustainable architecture among architects, engineers, and the general public is crucial. Fostering an understanding of the environmental implications of our designs is paramount to driving positive change. - Policy Implementation: Establishing robust environmental regulations and incentives is essential to promote sustainable practices within the construction industry. These measures should encompass energy efficiency standards, the utilization of eco-friendly materials, and the adoption of renewable energy sources. - Design Innovation: Embracing innovative architectural techniques that minimize environmental impact is paramount. This includes strategies such as passive heating and cooling systems, rainwater harvesting, and the integration of natural elements into building designs. By adopting these measures, we can collectively steer our architectural practices towards a more sustainable future. Architectural Portfolio (Year 1 Semester 1)

The problem of the soft story has been continuously revisited in seismic-related literature, while there are plenty of solutions available for retrofitting and strengthening buildings displaying this design discontinuity. However, the construction of a building is never an engineering problem alone; it involves economic constraints, urban processes, users’ preferences, and architectural design. Interestingly, these parameters have been absent from the discussion of why, after years of advanced development in seismic engineering, buildings in many seismic-prone countries are still designed with soft stories. This seminar discusses an understanding of the typological architectural aspects behind the soft story—how this type of architecture emerged in Türkiye. This is because this country has experienced a long list of earthquakes associated with both soft stories and extensive damage to reinforced concrete buildings, with no sign of a permanent solution to this problem. The presentation is ultimately an attempt to show a different yet much-needed view of the problem, with the hope that this may eventually lead to future implementations of suitable solutions for soft stories.
