As a professional (Pupil Surveyor) with extensive experience, I recently had a fascinating encounter on site that highlighted the importance of consulting qualified professionals in our field. Today, a gentleman approached me on site, seeking assurance about a beacon's recognition by the government. It was evident that he had been misled, as the beacon's positioning, facing and the number were incorrect. Sadly, he fell victim to unscrupulous individuals posing as surveyors. Surveying isn't merely about laying beacons; it's about precision, accuracy, and adherence to standards. Only qualified surveyors understand the nuances of correct digging, positioning, and facing of beacons. These factors significantly impact the accuracy of land demarcation. My role as a Surveyor extends beyond just technical expertise; it's about ensuring clients receive reliable and trustworthy service. Good field experience is a required foundation of any land surveyor. Often I get survey students/grads within the first year clamoring for more office time. However if you intend on getting a license as a land surveyor. I would value the initial field time. Why? Lets look at a few roles a land surveyor takes on: 1️⃣ Starting a business Starting my business as one man company in 2020, the primary part of my work was in the field. Without the relevant experience, I would have had trouble competently running a robotic instrument on the various types of work. 2️⃣ Managing crews. You would need to have enough experience to properly direct and guide field staff. And yes they would figure out pretty quick if you do not have the relevant experience. 3️⃣ Quotes You will need to have a good idea of how much field time is typically needed for each project. This is critical as field work will often make up the largest cost of survey projects. This post is not to suggest office time isn't needed.
