Recently, I've been reflecting on how my passion for playing football mirrors my professional journey in managing teams and driving toward shared goals. On the football field, every player has a role, but the magic happens when we sync as a unit, anticipating each other's moves, and playing to our strengths. It’s a dance of strategy and skill, where individual brilliance shines but collective effort triumphs. This game has taught me about leadership, teamwork, and the power of a unified goal. Just like in football, in the business world, it's about bringing diverse talents together, aligning our efforts, and chasing that common goal with determination and spirit. Every match is a reminder: the strength of a team lies in its ability to work together under pressure, celebrate each other's successes, and learn from every setback. Competition?   Many of us thrive in an arena of competition. I used to think it was more naturally a ‘boy’ thing, but from observing performance tennis, ‘girls’ can be highly motivated by competition as well.   So, what about outside of sport?   Is competition a good thing in work?   There is much focus of ‘team’ and ‘team first’ these days.  Given the complexity of business, the variety of locations that we work from and the number of stakeholders involved, it’s a real challenge to build teams into cohesive forces.   At New Level Results Limited, we work to turn teams into aligned and accountable forces for building companies.   Much of the work is focused on finding the common goals and motivators that the team and line management can buy into. Once the team starts to see the difference, then the team members pull together to achieve higher results.     BUT, there is still room for individuals with a strong competitive drive. I would argue that we want competitive people in our team. In many cases they drive the team to new heights of greatness. Have you observed, certain captains having the knack to win trophies? 🏆 MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Ricky Ponting, Clive Lloyd They have a very intricate / nuanced understanding of their teams Strengths. 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿 They give clarity to their team before the tournament what is expected of each one, why that is expected and the entire game plan will be set up in a way to leverage the team's strengths, leaving no stone unturned. Top down planning (whom to have in the team basis the pitch, the country being played against etc) and bottom up planning (basis the strengths of selected core team members) go hand in hand. They charge their players, connect it to bigger than life stories, connecting them to a bigger cause (2011 - For Sachin, 2024 - For Dravid, Rohit & Kohli). High EQ individuals. 🧠 Getting people to focus on their strengths, backing them to the core - basis an intricate understanding the Captain has of his players coming from keen observation & an ability to knit it to the bigger plot. Rather than banging against the wall.... Be an OUTSTANDING LEADER. You will be surprised by how much you can get done, when your personnel believe in themselves & you play to their strengths. 🔥🔥🔥

If you're building a team, remember that diversity is the key to success. Each individual brings a unique set of skills to the table, whether it be technical expertise, communication skills, creativity, or innovation. As a leader, it's essential to have a clear vision of how to utilize these diverse skill sets to achieve your project goals. This concept can be compared to a cricket team, where the captain knows the strengths and weaknesses of each player, whether they are a batsman, bowler, fielder, or all-rounder. By leveraging their individual skills, the team can work together effectively to achieve victory. Most teams are not performing to their full potential! This certainly was not the case for Ben Hunt-Davis and the Olympic squad - Gold medal winners. In their persuit of victory they focused totally on performance. This requires a really clear objective everyone is fully bought into and is relentless in focusing on the performance required for the good of the team. “If you see something that's not as good as it could be and choose not to discuss it, you're helping us lose” Ben Hunt-Davis Will it make the boat go faster? A great starter alone is simply not enough if a team wants to go to the highest level. Any team that wants to excel must have good substitutes as well as starters. That's true in any field, not just sports. You may be able to do some wonderful things with a handful of top people, but if you want your team to do well over the long haul, you've got to build your bench.
