IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK: The youngest pandemic children are now in school, and many are showing signs of being academically and developmentally behind. Although it’s still unknown whether young children will experience long-term effects from the pandemic, researchers remain optimistic. “It is absolutely possible to catch up, if we catch things early,” said Dr. Dani Dumitriu, a pediatrician and neuroscientist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and chair of the study on pandemic newborns. Dr. Dumitriu also told The New York Times that the pandemic may have had some benefits for young children, such as increased resiliency and more time with family.
