NEWS: UMass Chan Medical School Opens New Education and Research Building -- The University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School opened the $325 million New Education and Research Building in June of 2024 in Worcester. ZGF Architects and ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge designed the 350,000-sf project to drive discovery in gene therapy, molecular medicine, and the neurosciences, as well as housing the departments of neurology and neurobiology. Featuring advanced core facilities to support basic research and translational studies, the nine-story tower includes an FDA-compliant manufacturing center for clinical trial therapeutics. The future-facing development accommodates over 70 principal investigators, as well as providing instructional venues capable of serving larger class sizes to address the shortage of physicians, nurses, and health professionals in the commonwealth and the nation. The collaborative facility is illuminated by natural light and offers a variety of social spaces connected by active circulation routes to promote interaction and enhance occupant wellbeing. The structure utilizes a double-skin façade, geothermal heat pumps, and highly efficient mechanical systems. Shawmut Design and Construction began work in early 2021 on the project, which is targeting LEED Gold certification while striving for net-zero energy performance. https://lnkd.in/eVJR-cVt #AcademicMedical #AcademicMedical #Biomedical #ResearchAndDevelopment #EnergyUseReduction #Sustainability #Genomics #Collaboration

⚪ Giving Young Researchers a Start with AO Foundation ⚪ Congratulations to our very own Dr. Jessica Gaff as a winner of the 2023 AO Spine Research Start-up Grant! "Through this program, AO Spine aims to identify, engage, and mentor talented young researchers in the early stages of their careers. Here, the 2023 winners explain what they aim to achieve and how their studies will improve patient care. This award is targeted towards investigators of 40 years or younger, who are within five years of completing a professional degree or initiating their first assistant professorship at an academic institution." - AO Foundation https://buff.ly/3tZgYGW Click on the link below to read more about Dr. Gaff's project, "Investigating the role of polymorphisms in genes involved in inflammation in spontaneous resorption of herniated discs". We are proud of you Dr. Gaff and the work that you are doing on behalf of Neurospine Foundation to improve patient outcomes.

Yuan Yang, an associate professor in Illinois BIOE, has joined the Beckman Institute. Welcome! 👏 His research uses multi-modal brain imaging to investigate how the sensorimotor system adapts and reorganizes after a unilateral brain injury caused by #stroke. Yang is "very excited about the imaging facilities and computational resources in the Beckman," he said, and "is looking forward to interdisciplinary collaborations with many investigators at Beckman to advance our understanding in neuroplasticity and brain recovery."

USF Dept. of Medical Engineering’s George Spirou, PhD received a 5-year, $3.3M NIH R01 grant from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communicative Disorders to study formation of neural circuits during early brain development. The goal of this research is to capture dynamics of neural circuit formation and determine which maturational events are dependent on spontaneous action potential activity. The synaptic connection is a key element in the neural circuit that computes sound location by comparing inputs from the two ears, via the largest nerve terminal in the mammalian brain. The project utilizes measurement of biophysical properties of the neurons, cutting edge light and electron microscopy large-volume imaging techniques, viral vector tools to focally modify synaptic activity and machine learning based auto-segmentation of cells and organelles from large image volumes. Data produced could provide a roadmap to understand severe developmental disorders that result from problems in early brain development, and to reorganize and possibly re-connect neurons in mature brains affected by injury or disease. This project is an ongoing collaboration with colleagues at UC San Diego, Oregon Health & Science University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
