Solar Energy for the Standing Rock Nation! A big shout-out to Stephanie Yellow Hammer - a real clean energy champion for her tribe! From the Honnold Foundation: "The impact of solar and renewable energy for the Standing Rock Nation could be huge. Historically our people were stewards of the land [...] but [because of] colonization and many of our traditional ways of life being taken from us, we were forced to assimilate. If we had more solar and renewable energy here, this would decrease our dependence on fossil fuels." Meet Stephanie Yellow Hammer, a lifelong resident of the Standing Rock Nation and a recent addition to the Standing Rock Tribal Council. As a tribal college graduate in early childhood education, Stephanie dedicates herself to supporting children and families, focusing on early childhood interventions Now, she’s putting that experience to work on the Tribal Council’s health, education, and welfare committee. As a single parent and grandparent of five, one of Stephanie’s longstanding dreams was to own a home on tribal land, which she was proud to achieve in 2014. Following protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline in 2016, she realized that true ownership for her also meant moving away from fossil fuels and harnessing the energy of the sun. Through a partnership with Grid Tribal, Stephanie installed solar on her home, even doing some of the wiring herself. Thanks to net metering policies, Stephanie’s install cut her utility bill from 14 cents per kwh to 1 cent per kwh. Now, Stephanie hopes that a Honnold Foundation partnership with SAGE Development Authority on #standingrock can bring energy independence to more members of the Standing Rock Nation: “I would love to see solar be the primary source for our electric power. Right now many Standing Rock Authority homes are powered by propane, and I would love to see everything powered by solar and wind, and to no longer have our tribal members worried about running out of propane in the winter.” Read more about this powerful partnership that is #gettingthingsdone on #standingrock! ☀ 🌟 . #solar #tribalcleanenergy #energysovereignty

Two of my mentors in matters of equity in my energy efficiency program consulting work--Mary Wambui-Ekop and Elizabeth Chant--have helped me understand why the term "Hard to Reach" should not be used. This piece addresses the issue very nicely as well: https://lnkd.in/gsbuEzgU. And yet today I saw "Hard to Reach" again in a draft energy efficiency plan that professes to prioritize equity. Could we agree on an alternative term or terms for our important work to advance equity in ratepayer funded energy efficiency programs? Please note your suggestions in comments below.
