Travelling home, looking back on an excellent week at work and forwards at the huge opportunity ahead in the energy sector. I spent this week out on a site visit with Gary Connor MSc MALaw and Austin Cherry and had my first chance to go offshore and visit a turbine. Big thanks to Jamie Bond, Liam Regan and team for hosting us and keeping us safe. A few reflections: 1. Huge kudos to all the guys and girls that work hands on in this industry, especially offshore. It was really eye-opening to see the hard work that goes on day-in day-out, in challenging conditions to keep assets generating. Being inside a turbine you see how cramped and hot and hard the work is, with not insignificant hazards. We were fortunate to visit on a fairly calm day but it would take some guts to transfer in the middle of winter in harsh weather. 2. The coordination required between many people and companies is so impressive. We were multiple Vattenfall technician teams and at least 4 different contractors with various specialisms going out on one day on one windfarm. Zooming out to the whole energy industry, with many emerging and interconnected technologies, across the whole world in a short space of time to deliver the energy transition is a mind boggling challenge. But what an incredible opportunity for everyone working in it. 3. The scale of the change is massive. When you get up close the machines are giant. To scale up and deliver we're going to need such huge amounts of materials, people, innovation, capital, the list goes on. It's pleasing to see the incoming The Labour Party government taking decisive action to support. Let's hope they carry on that track and continue to enable the huge economic growth opportunity this is. Tom Harper, Mark Turner, Phil Grant can you name that power station? (I hope the Baringa NTPS tradition is still going strong!) Video - Me very excited to be stood 100m above the water on top of the nacelle, looking out at a sea of Vattenfall and Ørsted turbines.

On November 9, 2021, GE announced its intent to transform itself into three independent public companies. This morning, that intent became reality, as GE Vernova made its debut on the floor of the NYSE. I couldn’t be prouder of the hard work our #oneteam has put in to ready our company for this moment. Being a founding member of GE Vernova—and getting to help tell the story of where GE will soar from here—will always be a highlight of my career. We have an important mission ahead: electrify the world while simultaneously decarbonizing it for not only our generation, but many more to come. On a more personal note, the last 875 days have been an absolute masterclass in #communications. There’s a reason GE’s comms team was just named In-House Dynasty of the Last 25 Years by PRWeek. I wouldn’t be the communicator I am today without having had the opportunity to work alongside some of the best in the business (I won’t even attempt to tag them, because there are far too many). Once, now, forever…we’ll always be GE. 💚 #ge #generalelectric #gevernova #electrification #decarbonization #energytransition

This is a video I took tonight outside Mojave California. The red flashing lights across the hillside and horizon are wind turbines. (The urban lights at the end is Mojave itself.) The turbine lights are for the benefit of aviators - Mojave is home to an airport/spaceport and Edwards Air Force Base is also reasonably close. There is radar technology emerging which can activate the lights when planes get close, saving the need to keep the lights on all night, but it's not been implemented here yet (and adds to cost). l'm sure I'll have some images of the daytime view to share in the coming days. I've spoken to a few people locally about the wind farms, and when it comes to visual amenity some describe it as a blight, others are indifferent and some quite like the 'Christmas tree' effect. My tiny sample size reflects the diversity of Australian views about moving close to renewables which just came out in a CSIRO survey (https://lnkd.in/gGk_mFP2). I haven't yet had the time to read the full reports, but when you break out the responses of respondents who live 'out of town' (i.e. in rural areas) it is clear that there is greater scepticism about the need for and benefits arising from renewable energy projects, more concern about negative impacts, and less desire to live near projects and transmission lines. When you consider that these projects are likely to be built in disproportionately regional areas, this presents a real conundrum. I'm looking forward to exploring that conundrum further over the next couple of months of Churchill Fellowship travels. #churchillfellowship #renewables #windpower #turbines #energytransition

This year, on #EarthDay, I’m delighted to share that Lockheed Martin UK has reported a 62% reduction of emissions from its UK operations in 2023, and we’re committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. As Chair of our #LockheedMartin UK Net Carbon Zero working group, my role is to ensure we remain on target to achieve our commitment, and deliver on our two very clear goals: ✅ Carbon reduction – we project 29% reduction by 2028 ✅ Renewable energy sources – commitment to 100% green energy where possible In my view, there are some very clear actions that sit at the heart of driving impactful change for a more sustainable and greener world, including: 💡 Innovation; 🔄 willingness to embrace change; ⭕ challenging the norm; and 🧠 a growth mindset. I’d encourage us all to take a few moments to reflect on what other (big or little) changes we can make as individuals (or as a business) to deliver on our collective responsibility to building a more sustainable world, benefitting generations to come. Download the full report to find out more about our commitment to achieving #NetZero: https://lnkd.in/eFZNmetn #SustainabilityMatters #SocialImpact
