NACD Northern California enjoyed another special evening of rich discussion at our private dinner on the topic of "Empowering Energy Transition from the Board Perspective." Key discussion points included: ✅ Disclosure—Be fully informed when disclosing energy-transition goals and progress toward those goals. Recognize tensions between the aspirational and the achievable, ask questions and evaluate assumptions, and use supporting data to reach conclusions. ✅ Oversight and Strategy—Assess both risks and opportunities in setting decarbonization strategy, including competitive and reputational risks, impacts on stakeholders, opportunities presented by innovative technologies, and stranded assets. Be mindful of shifts in energy that will arise during the transition, including the significant expected growth of power demand in the US over the next five years and its impact on decarbonization strategies. ✅ Sustainable Sustainability Efforts—Develop a clear long-term strategy for energy transition that aligns with the company's overall business objectives and sustainability goals. Profitability and sustainability cannot become competing priorities. ✅ Measuring and Reporting—Have management establish metrics and key performance indicators to track progress toward energy-transition goals. Prepare for reporting requirements on sustainability performance to investors, regulators, and potentially other stakeholders. Evaluate the risks and rewards around reporting when not required, at least until the treatment of reported information and litigation risks are clearer. ✅ Financial Implication—Evaluate the financial implications of energy transition, including the costs of transitioning to and benefits of renewable energy sources, potential cost savings from energy efficiency measures, and opportunities presented by sustainable practices. ✅ Government Subsidies—Current government subsidies incentivize energy transition. If the subsidies go away, the cost of continuing to pursue energy-transition goals and strategies may increase substantially. Boards should understand the resulting potential fiscal impact. A special thank you to our wonderful hosts from Baker Botts, Jason Bennett, Samantha Crispin, Jonathan Gordon, and Catherine Zinn for generously hosting this dinner, guiding the conversation, and bringing us all together. #NACD #energytransition #sustainability

Meet George Norgbe an Energy Efficiency Product Analyst at MD Energy Advisors who joined the team earlier this year. Curious about George's journey, we asked him about his background and what led him to the world of energy. 💡 George's professional journey didn't initially start in the energy sector. In fact, he started his career in the nonprofit world utilizing his psychology background. 📌His career with MD Energy Advisors marks his first foray into the dynamic world of energy. His success serves as a powerful reminder that a background in energy isn't a prerequisite. Today, he is still pursuing his passion for Psychology at University of Maryland Baltimore County where he is working towards his Master of Arts in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Way to go George! At MD Energy Advisors, we embrace diverse backgrounds and perspectives, recognizing that success stems from the team and a wealth of knowledge. George's story reinforces our belief that passion, dedication, and a commitment to excellence can transcend industry boundaries. Whether you're starting with lots of career experience and zero experience in energy like George or have spent 25 years in the field like MDEA team member Christine Ciavardini (or 30 like David Borchardt) if you share a passion for driving positive change and want to be a part of our journey, we want to hear from you! 🔗Check out our career opportunities: http://bit.ly/3tEYEin. #JoinUs #energy #finance #banking #bankingindustry #sustainability #careers #work #cpace #mdenergyadvisors #maryland #engineering #solar #solarenergy #MDEA #business #recognition #utilities #energyprocurement #BuildingPerformanceStandards #SustainabilityLeadership

At On.Energy, 2023 was amazing, and I'm excited about our 2024. Our IPP business continues to grow with our assets in ERCOT under construction and exciting new projects unfolding in Texas and other U.S, regions. Intersolar 2024 has me even more excited as I find myself immersed in this vibrant atmosphere, collaborating with peers, partner suppliers, technology providers, transmission companies, legislators, and policymakers. Witnessing this energy and collaboration at this conference not only excites me, it re-energizes me as I see this industry collectively driving the inevitable reality of this energy transition. The goal of achieving a carbon-neutral industry isn't just talk; it's an unstoppable force. The change is here, and I'm excited about the present and the future of this industry.

CEA President David Holt warns about the negative impacts of overreaching government energy policies. States like #California, #NewYork, and those in #NewEngland are restricting the use of #naturalgas and hindering the development of critical energy infrastructure. These misguided policies are driving up energy costs for families and businesses, threatening the reliability of our electric grid, and forcing companies to consider relocating to more energy-friendly states. Despite the US leading the world in emissions reduction, failed government policies and rampant inflation under the current leadership have caused electricity prices to surge 30% in just two years, costing the average household an extra $1,200 annually. Watch the full interview to learn why energy policy should be a non-partisan issue, as it affects every American ⬇
Today we had the pleasure of hosting David Holt, President of the Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), for an important discussion on #electricity #affordability and #reliability for #consumers. David’s background is in #government affairs with over thirty years of experience working for state and federal agencies and directing outreach and advocacy efforts. The #CEA will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025 and has nearly 400 corporate members and over 550,000 individual members representing families, farmers, small businesses, distributors, labor organizations, manufacturers, and energy providers. Beyond his leadership at the CEA, David also serves as Managing Partner of HBW Resources, a consultancy specializing in strategic planning and government affairs in the #energy, #transportation, and #environmental sectors. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to visit with David.

I recently attended the Offshore Energies UK business breakfast at the P&J Live, during which OEUK released their annual Economy & People Report. This provided an opportunity for timely and appropriate discussion, particularly as we approach the impending general election. The report details that with supportive policy, capital investment in offshore energy could rise by over 50%, from £13 billion last year to more than £20 billion by the early 2030s. This investment is crucial for achieving the UK’s net zero goals and securing energy supply. And of course the vast number of jobs and local businesses this will also create and support. Some headline takeaways from myself, included; The need for a home grown energy transition will only be recognised if we harness the experience and expertise of our existing highly skilled workforce and supply chain. This challenge is undoubtedly one of the biggest opportunities the UK energy sector will face during our generation. However to recognise the opportunity, some critical challenges need to be addressed. Managing a home grown energy transition cannot be managed by current resources alone, and we need to attract new talent into the industry to be able to manage the projected growth. How do we attract the next generation of skills to the industry? A career in energy provides individuals a wealth of opportunity and a relentless focus in promoting this through our STEM programs, actively engaging schools, collages and universities, will help develop our workforce and leadership for the future. How do we break down barriers such that we see far greater collaboration? Collaboration cross industry, operators, supply chain, fiscal and policy makers etc. all need to play their part in our transition to cleaner more sustainable energy sources. Collaboration is happening, but are we doing enough? Thank you to Offshore Energies UK and Lois Wilkinson for hosting me. Apprenticeships schemes such as these are vital to developing the skills needed for a successful transition to net zero. And the fuels sector is part of industrial clusters which offer scope for attractive, broad-based apprenticeships that the economy needs. But as we make clear in our recently published report ‘Policies for the fuels sector,’ reforms are needed from UK Government to the Apprenticeship Levy and the wider package of adult learning in the UK. You can read more about what UK Government needs to do so the fuels sector can transition to net zero with a thriving industrial sector still in place here: https://lnkd.in/g5gvRKsn
