Top stories today 📰 Weekend Press: Thames Water plots break-up as it scrambles to avoid nationalisation https://buff.ly/3TPzDhl This week’s roundup of sector news from the weekend’s national press includes speculation that Thames Water is about to be broken up in a bid to avoid renationalisation; news that the Environment Agency chair Alan Lovell had dinner with water company lobbyists days before plans for a 40% hike in bills were reported; and a warning from the UK’s largest battery storage fund that investment in the sector is at risk because of the way the country’s electricity system is run. ⚡ Forecast surge in Demand Flexibility Service capacity fails to materialise https://buff.ly/4apR52Y The amount of demand reduction available through the Demand Flexibility Service over winter failed to reach the levels predicted by National Grid ESO ahead of its relaunch. In its annual Winter Outlook issued in September, the ESO predicted that 1GW of capacity would be made available through the DFS with a “fairly moderate” uptake. However, the ESO has now revealed the second iteration of the DFS, which concluded at the end of March, delivered a peak demand reduction of more than 400MW. 🪁 2030 target risks long-term offshore wind roll out, Orsted warns Putting too much focus on the government’s target of 50GW of offshore wind by 2030 could be “actively detrimental” in the long-term, Ørsted executives have warned. Olivia Breese, interim Europe CEO of the renewable power giant, said that trying too hard to hit the 50GW target by the end of the decade could make subsequent targets less achievable. She also questioned whether the 2030 target is still feasible.

Not sure if you all saw this on 60 Minutes last night. 60 MINUTES - NEWSMAKERS Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon pursues green, carbon-negative agenda in one of the nation's reddest states. Wyoming is driving carbon-negative initiatives and doing great things to advance renewable energy projects while balancing the current Coal and Oil and Gas activities. For example, they are working with Crusoe and other O&G companies on capturing excess flare gas that adds to greenhouse gas emissions and using it to energize data centers while reducing GHG emissions. Wyoming is also proposing to build the largest wind farm in the US that will send electricity to California and other states. Kudos to Governor Mark Gordon for all his efforts and commitment to supporting climate change initiatives in Wyoming. https://lnkd.in/gNrHhCP7 #climatechange #climateaction #renewableenergy #windpower #carboncapture #carbonnegative

Could 2024 be the year of the green dilemma? New electricity pylons arriving in the UK countryside are sparking tensions amongst environmentalists. To get to net zero, the UK will need to rapidly build more electrical transmission lines, but campaigners are concerned about their impact on our natural landscape. In our 2024 Signal, we look at how decision-makers will need to navigate these clashing views, as the country faces the question of where to build our green infrastructure. Read the article, part of our collection of 2024 Future Signals 📡 https://bit.ly/3tGScuY

Planning Manager at Aira Home UK, Planning Manager for Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Peterborough and North East England
Planning Permission As a Planning Manager, me and my team work alongside a variety of councils across Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Peterborough and the North East of England to process planning permission applications for our customers. Our experience varies wildly depending on which council we are working with, but the general consensus remains that this process takes a good long while (8-12 weeks)! Understandable as we know the councils are very busy! But given the previous, and the new Governments climate change targets, replacing fossil fuel systems with environmentally friendly systems should be at the forefront of approvals! We can also attest to the need to educate the Government and councils on these systems, as there is a serious lack of understanding about what an air source heat pump is! I hope with the new Government, we can work closer with them and the councils to improve this process and transition the UK from gas guzzling, to green energy! It's the obvious way forward, surely? #Greenenergy #Aira #airsourceheatpump
