Dear AMLAW 50 law firms, Kirkland & Ellis promotes all 7th years to non-equity partners. Despite having the word “partner” in their title, they really are the equivalent of a one tier law firm partnership promoting a 7th year to counsel. Can we all agree right here right now to stop penalizing counsels in the lateral market from Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Gunderson Dettmer, Fenwick & West, Sullivan & Cromwell LLP (etc) and treating them differently than Kirkland non -shares? And dear firms with two-tier partnerships (i.e. Goodwin, Dechert LLP, Latham & Watkins), and *wink wink* law firms that won't admit that they have a two-tier partnership (Gibson Dunn , Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP), can you please acknowledge that a really talented counsel from a one-tier partnership does deserve to at least be considered to be an income partner? It's a bitter-sweet day. The bitter is that Snow Christensen & Martineau as a stand-alone institution will become no more after serving Utah and beyond for 135 years. The sweet, however, are the various benefits, synergies, and advantages that come with merging with a national law firm with presences in numerous markets and active practices in seemingly all substantive areas that any client could benefit from. Change is always difficult -- and can sometimes be painful. But I personally know from many experiences in my life that changes -- and definitely major changes -- can lead to far better outcomes than one could have ever expected beforehand!! And I have no doubt that the union between SCM and SpencerFane will garner such an outcome. We will be the same attorneys, in the same locations, representing the same clients. US firms have demonstrated robust growth over the past few years, and this upward trend continues in the current year. Notably, the attention of US law firms toward the UK has undoubtedly intensified, marking a significant shift from a decade ago. Leading the pack is Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, the Chicago powerhouse, sharing the top spot primarily due to an ongoing raid on Kirkland & Ellis (Chicago), the world's highest-grossing law firm.
