Restaurants are adding carbon taxes to their bills as they increasingly take responsibility for their carbon footprint. I think this is a great start. Harvest Systems technology can take it a step further by taking Goodfellas Pizzeria's excess heat and reusing it in their restaurant, actually saving them money. You wanna know what’s crazy?! This was the first time many of our Sumatran smallholder coffee farmers partners had ever smelled and tasted their own coffee ☕️ 🤯 It raised a few tricky questions, questions that I’ve been thinking about since. Questions like… 👉🏻How can you truly appreciate the value of your product if you’ve never tasted it?! 👉🏻How can you feel empowered in a buyer & seller relationship if you cannot appraise the sensorial aspect of a product that’s valued almost exclusively on its sensorial attributes?! For you and me it might sound ludicrous but for smallholder farmers globally not being able to taste your own product is not unusual. After all, when margins are already slim on the coffee you sell and survival itself is the focus, splurging on equipment like a cherry depulper, let alone an Ikawa sample coffee roaster, can feel not only a million miles away financially, but a world apart from a knowledge perspective too. It makes for uncomfortable reading, but access to capital and knowledge are the purview of those who already have wealth and hard to come by for those that don’t. Folks; especially those of you within the corporate sustainability and procurement space, I know we can all do so much better 💪🏻 Sourcing coffee sustainably can be so much more than a casual box tick on a prerequisite list that mentions FairTrade or Rainforest Alliance, hanging up your boots and calling it a day. Sourcing coffee sustainably can be about transforming communities that strive for more but have lacked the resources to achieve it. It can be a genuine point of pride for you, your team and company and the corporate values you profess. And for the smallholder producers whose product you buy, let me tell you, it can be positively life changing. Currently, the coffee industry faces many challenges, one of which is the significant gap between production and the final product. Encouraging producers to taste, evaluate, and understand the coffee they are harvesting greatly enhances the quality of the final product and creates a stronger connection between harvesting practices and the end flavor. Gradually, changes can be made in the industry to benefit everyone in the supply chain. -Everyone in coffee should be a winner.
