Can you imagine a time before EFTPOS? 💳    The year is 1984. You’re about to pay for your petrol at the servo when the attendant hands you one of the first ever EFTPOS machines.    It may not look like much, but this mighty machine revolutionised commercial payments, allowing businesses to receive electronic funds immediately.    The Burroughs EF 1810 was a popular early model used by merchants. The terminal even included a pin pad and receipt function.     Let us know if you remember 👇

I was working in CBA’s EDP Department on the NCR Midrange system that ran the EFTPOS application on the day it went live. That system ran with only 2mb of ram and booted off a punched card deck. The system was then also used to run the bank’s Phone Banking application.

I recall Bankcard. And fondly recall my manager when I was working at the CBA back then, wearing a Bankcard cuff links and tie to work.

I think I missed that era entirely but big respect to those before us who invented the idea of new ways of payments. Inevitably, even cards and EFTPOS will one day give way to much faster and more effienct methods, digital (not cypto) currency might just be the answer, coupled with internet, a new touch free era will dawn.

Yes many remember and I think the first transactions were at a petrol station in Epping.
