If the government wants to bring companies before the senate to make inquiries, could they please fill the bench with qualified people. Understanding Optus’ approach to its management of its network outage requires at a minimum, technical, risk and incident outage expertise. It’s not good enough for the senate to put forward people who, for example, don’t know what redundancy means for a network operator. I didn’t even hear any question around service level agreements! Not even in relation to 000 questions by the government. Given the scale out the outage, I thought the Optus team did a great job. Maybe the senate should bring Metro Trains or one of its own Government departments that went down, before the inquiry and ask them why they built a network that had single points of failure in it! There is no excuse for large corporates to not have their own restoration plans. There is fibre literally everywhere and at least two alternative providers. The senate inquiry into Optus could have been a great opportunity to understand the approach taken by Optus and how it compares to best practice. I guess it was all we could expect from the government.

As a government business enterprise, people may have different ideas about what 'success' looks like for nbn, especially given the breadth of ambitions laid out in the 2022 Statement of Expectations for nbn. In Venture's most recent telco note, we've narrowed our focus to look at three metrics we believe are worth watching in terms of nbn's growth: - expansion of the greenfield footprint, - brownfield take-up rates, and - speed tier mix.

Note that Telia, which she previously ran, does not own most of the infrastructures over which it operates. Does the cut back in BT capex indicate that BT will similarly become an anchor tenant for many of its current full-fibre competitors? Last week, nbn co presented its FY23 results. Revenue continues to grow, driven primarily by earning more from its existing customers. Net subscriber growth was low, with losses in brownfield areas. Network investments and cost reduction were a major focus of nbn’s FY23 results presentation. In terms of revenue growth, we believe three key metrics are worth watching – greenfield expansion, brownfield take-up rates, and speed mix.
