Meet our Reentry To Resilience (R2R) team. CISNC's R2R program serves youth transitioning from Youth Development Centers (YDC's ) back into their communities and schools. Last month, for Second Chance Act Month, the R2R team held a "Rep Your YDC" competition, encouraging students to share what a second chance means to them through song, poetry, rap, art, crochet work, and written stories. All of the youth entries were AMAZING!! One winner was chosen from each YDC, and that winner “competed” against each respective YDC winner. The competition was strong, and the youth really showed their creativity! It was a tough choice for the R2R team! The overall winner of the Second Chance Month “Rep Your YDC” competition is a young lady at Chatham YDC.

Today is World Braille Day. People who are blind celebrate this day to honor Louis Braille, the creator of the Braille system which we use to read and write. Braille is the only method that we have as people who are blind to truly learn literacy including spelling, proper punctuation, document formatting and sentence structure. While some of these skills can be learned by using talking computers, Braille users tend to be better communicators when we are able to proofread our work more carefully by examining our texts letter by letter without thinking instead of having to go through the tedious process of doing so while listening to speech. Braille also allows us to engage with our audience when we are speaking, rather than having to listen to our notes to keep ourselves on track. With Braille, we can read our notes as needed while sending the message to our audience that they truly do matter while we are speaking. It is a powerful tool to show any members of society that we are paying attention to them in the interactions we have. Speaking from personal experience, trying to learn advanced mathematics by having formulas read to me was almost impossible for me to follow. I did not have the same difficulties when I had access to the very same information in Braille. At CNIB, we realize how important it is for our children to thrive in the education system. Education is one of the best predictors of future success.Braille is an essential tool for that to happen. I encourage all educators who are working with blind children in any capacity to not only promote Braille but to ensure that it is properly produced and provided to the student at the same time as other classmates receive their materials. Only offering students two or three Braille lessons each term is woefully inadequate. This happens in some Canadian locations. After all, I know you wouldn’t accept that level of support for your sighted children. I know that I don’t. Why should parents of children who are blind be put in that position? Calling all teachers and students! Have you heard of the NCTR's Imagine a Canada program? This is a micro-grant program that gives money to individual students or class groups who want to submit an idea for a project that shows what a reconciled Canada could look like. For individual students, there is an art and essay stream (also includes poetry!), and for class groups, it can really be anything your students come up with. For example, planting medicine gardens, painting murals, workshops led by Elders and Knowledge Keepers, etc, are all ideas that have been funded in the past. The deadline is coming up, so talk to your students! In the link, you can also browse past year's winning projects if you're looking for inspiration. We are celebrating "International Read to Me Day" today, this heart warming occasion that encourages adults to read to children and inspires young ones to ask their parents or other adults in their lives to read to them. 📚🌟 Here are some key aspects of International Read to Me Day: 1. Empowering Children 2. Promoting Reading Activities 3. Showcasing Passionate Organizations 4. Addressing Resource Disparities Why Does Reading Matter? Research shows that being read to remains an essential factor, independent of other variables like parents' education. Children aged 4 to 5 years who are read to 3-4 times a week have reading ages approximately 6 months ahead of those read to only once or twice a week. Literacy is a for life skill! Everyone deserve to be able to read. So, let's celebrate International Read to Me Day by sharing the joy of reading with Story Dogs and the young ones around us! 📖🌟
