At Nacro, we believe that rehabilitation must be at the heart of an effective justice system. And that for people who enter the criminal justice system it should be the start of building something better, not a road to nowhere. For people coming out of prison, having a job is vital to start rebuilding their lives. However, 70% of people remain unemployed six months after they leave prison. To ensure more people who leave prison are able to find work, prisons need to give people the support, training and experience to set them up to get a job when they get out. There are some good training and employment schemes in prison, but it remains the case that only about half of people in prison are in employment or training. And often the work that people do in prison does not prepare them for work in the outside world. This is a wasted opportunity for rehabilitation. #WastingTime

And how can we make prison spaces more child-friendly? 🤔 📄 A new report of Children of Prisoners Europe sheds light on this important issue and highlights key areas for improvement to make these visits less stressful. The basis for this report was a survey launched in 10 countries (mainly in the EU) with 48 children of different age groups participating. This campaign video by Nacro is 100% factual. A must-watch for anyone working in prisons who genuinely cares about rehabilitation. I want to go one step deeper and share my thoughts on each barrier mentioned in the video on why people spend so much wasted time in their cells rather than in meaningful work or education while inside. I haven't been asked by Nacro to do this, but I care so deeply about this topic that it would be criminal of me not to spark an honest conversation on it. In no particular order, the first barrier I want to tackle is: ⛔ "Delays getting to work in prison." This involves moving people in prison from their cells to classroom / workshop areas around the prison, either through structured moves by individual prison officers or during freeflow. 💭 Essentially, prison regimes are not designed with much flexibility in mind. If there isn't the number of staff required to facilitate activities, thenthat's it;, no off-wing activities will run that day. Given the chronic shortage of staff and the high numbers of staff on sick leave in some prisons, this results in an inconsistent offering to people in prison and a nightmare for teachers and trainers facilitating courses, etc. Speaking from my own experience and observations, workshop leaders are forced to lean on the good relationships they have with officers and other staff and practically bagger and beg them to move the individuals they need if there isn't a complete shutdown of activities. Sadly, this is the state of play in many prisons. If in-person learning is inconsistent at best, I've often wondered why alternative methods of enabling people to access learning aren't heavily invested in. One idea could be using Coracle in cell laptops to deliver virtual lessons. Or additional theory lessons and workbooks for industry activities. This lack of flexibility means that the time required for someone to complete an accredited course is significantly longer. Add to that the unexpected reality of being transferred to another prison at any point, which probably doesn't have the course that someone was halfway to completing. The result of all this is a poor experience of learning and poorer expectations of the value of engaging in activities whilst in custody. I'll end this one here.
