Kevin Eltife, chairman of The University of Texas System Board of Regents, spoke about how his mother's two main life lessons — help others and pursue an education — have guided his public service efforts for decades. "The most important thing I can do and have done in my public service the last 30 years is to do everything I can to make higher education affordable and accessible to every part of this state." 🇺🇸 In 1862, with the dash of his pen, Abraham Lincoln signed an act into law that helped build higher education institutions in every state. Today, we’d like to recognize this, along with continuing efforts to expand higher education to all Americans. The Morrill Act granted each state 30,000 acres of land to sell, the proceeds of which were used to set up public colleges and universities. These early “land-grant schools,” such as Rutgers University and University of Wisconsin-Madison, were required to teach agriculture and mechanical arts, providing higher education opportunities to a broader population. Presidents Benjamin Harrison and Bill Clinton signed additional acts in 1890 and 1994 to include 19 HBCUs (historically Black colleges and universities) and 36 TCUs (tribal colleges and universities) in the Land-Grant University Higher Education System. On today’s holiday, we applaud these advancements and look forward to a more inclusive future. Check out the detailed map of land-grant schools here: https://lnkd.in/eMvUg4xF. #highered #presidentsday

Developmental education is a critical issue at community colleges, according to a new UPDATE on Research and Leadership piece by Nina Owolabi and Stacy Bennett, Ph.D. When first introduced, developmental education was considered a means to support students in their pursuit of college-level courses. More recently, however, much of the research and discussion about developmental education has had a decidedly negative tone.
