🐺 International Wolf Day 🐺 This absolutely fenomenal animal group definitely deserves a celebration day. They play a massive role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem, keeping herds of large herbivores in check, thus minimising the risk of mass disease transferring between them. Additionally, their presence in the area has a positive impact on the regeneration of local vegetation. It is then with great sadness to see how many governments around the world blatantly vilify wolves. From public conferences that push the misguided "Will our children ever be safe?" message, to ordering senseless culling of wolves that goes against everything we today know about wolves' sociable structure, migration, and the beneficial role in their habitat. "We fear what we do not understand." So let's today look at wolves with an open mind and try to learn about them as much as possible. Not from fairytales, but from mountains of published research on this topic. ⭐️ Wolves really are amazing animals: whether it's them being impressive team players, caring relatives and babysitters, or custodians of a healthy ecosystem, wolves can do it all. African Elephants: The Gentle Giants Of The Wild The African elephant is the largest land mammal and is recognized by its big ears and long tusks. Imagine standing next to a creature that is as tall as a two-story building and weighs as much as a truck. That’s what it’s like to be near an African elephants, the world’s largest land animal. These amazing animals have a unique feature that sets them apart from other mammals—their trunk. An elephant's trunk is not just a long nose, but a flexible and powerful organ that can do many things. It can smell, breathe, drink, spray, grab, and even make sounds. Elephants need a lot of water to survive. They can drink up to 50 gallons (190 liters) of water a day. That’s more than a bathtub full of water. To drink, they use their trunk like a giant straw. They suck up water into their trunk and then squirt it into their mouth. They can also use their trunk to spray water over their body to cool off or to dust themselves with mud or sand to protect their skin from the sun and insects. But life is not easy for these gentle giants. They face many threats from humans and nature. Poachers kill them for their ivory tusks, which are used to make jewelry and other products. Their habitat is shrinking as humans clear land for farming and development. They also come into conflict with humans when they raid crops or damage property. Birders affectionately refer to this species as "butter-butt," since its bright yellow rump is an eye-catching and diagnostic field mark throughout the year. Adults also have a yellow crown patch, most obvious in adult males. This bird's species name, coronata, means crowned. Yellow-rumped Warblers pair up at the beginning of each breeding season. The female builds a cup-shaped nest of twigs, pine needles, and grasses lined with fur and mosses on a horizontal conifer branch. Feathers may be woven into the nest to curve up and over the eggs, and may provide protection from sun or insulation from cold. In ideal conditions, a pair will raise two broods in a season. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone in the world who didn’t know what a panda bear looked like. Unfortunately, much of the panda’s popularity is due to the fact that they are one of the world’s most endangered animals. It is for these reasons and more that we celebrate these amazing animals every March 16. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the plight of the remaining pandas still living in the wild. There are two major subspecies of panda -0000 Giant, black and white panda, and the Qinling panda which is a much smaller, brown panda. The latter was discovered in 1985 in the mountain ranges of China.
