10 Facts about howler monkeys! 1. Their name comes from the loud howl they make. 2. Because the howl can be heard as far away as three miles – they’re considered one of the loudest mammals on land! 3. They live in social groups with as many as twenty members and they compete for territory with rival groups by howling. 4. They are herbivores, eating leaves, fruit, and flowers. 5. The can move as quickly as 18 miles per hour. 6. They live in the forests of Central and South America 7. They are called black howler monkeys, but their fur can also be brown and grey. 8. Their predators include big cats like the jaguar and puma, as well as snakes or birds that also live up in the trees. 9. The Mayans depicted howler monkeys as gods in their art and mythology. 10. There are fifteen species of howler monkeys – not just black ones!
