GTC 360° Advisors is proud to be a member of the Coalition of Food Security (CFS), an initiative funded by Climate Smart Commodities USDA grant to work with underserved farmers on developing a pilot marketplace for climate smart farming using Ponix's innovative hydroponic vertical farms. As part of the grant, GTC 360° Advisors will lead the development and rollout of new carbon credit methodology for hydroponic lettuce in collaboration with the HBCU University of the District of Columbia. This new methodology will allow farmers across the country - and around the world - to receive and sell carbon credits for their climate smart practices when growing indoor hydroponic produce. The CFS team will recruit and train 24 minority-owned landowners and underserved farmers in Georgia on how to use and adopt Ponix’s tech-enabled hardware and software solutions. Additionally, CFS is providing internships to HBCU students and agribusiness opportunities. Exciting update from one of our MIF students, Daniel Zheng, about his work during his internship with the FAO in Rome! 🚀 "I’m currently focused on two key initiatives. First, I’m supporting the Task Force on Best Practices in implementing the Capacity, Knowledge, and Learning Action Plan of the Decade. A major project here is the "Ecosystem Restoration Professional Education and Learning Platform." Our Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism (FLRM) team is developing a global directory of landscape restoration educational platforms. This resource will help university students and other learners easily access valuable information on the FAO website. I’m leading the global stocktaking effort and creating an initial map for the site. After collecting feedback from stakeholders, we will refine the directory to better serve our audience. Secondly, I’m engaging with the Shan-shui initiatives of the Chinese government, meeting with government officials to gather their insights on adapting the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration plan and identifying the support they need from FAO." The concept of sustainability includes financial, environmental and social aspects – as with a three-legged milking stool – balance between the three is essential. It is easy to see how the first two aspects apply to farming businesses, if a farm is not financially sustainable then the business fails, and if it is not environmentally sustainable, this is at the detriment to soil health and subsequent yield potential. But social sustainability and farming is discussed far less frequently. In our latest blog we explore some of the perspectives that were shared in a recent Farm of the Future webinar, including how stacked enterprises, apprenticeships and hosting school visits can increase social sustainability in the farming sector. From a young age, I had the opportunity to spend time on family and friends' farms where we would pick fruits from the trees, vegetables from the garden, and prepare herbal teas from plants that grew in the yard whenever someone was unwell. Some of these farms had productive systems such as livestock, fish farming, oil palm, plantains, coffee, cocoa, and other crops. This sparked my curiosity to engage with the workers about the names of the trees, the wildlife around the farms, and most importantly, to develop a keen interest in learning agricultural tasks such as planting and harvesting, milking cows, repairing fences, preparing fertilizers, and many other activities. After becoming a professional, I aimed to channel my experience towards rural development, integrating more elements into the agricultural practices I already knew, and understanding how everything is part of a large food and land use system involving producers to the State. I then grasped the global vision of food production systems and the importance of practicing it from an integrative and holistic model that links the biological dynamics of natural ecosystems so that both Humans and Nature can thrive. Thanks to the Green Apprenticeship course I took in 2019 at Kibbutz Lotan, I connected with a group of people who shared the same curiosity of learning lifestyles and practices more in tune with natural processes and the importance of community to drive any type of transformation in ourselves and society. Pur future should be where gaps in workforces are filled with the seasonal movements and further career opportunities for TAFE certified, industry accredited Farm Managers, Supervisors, Young Farmers, and so on. Where they had a Trade Certificate, to validate the can work where farmers need them, where communities welcomed them, and where, they, as qualified Tradies wanted to relocate, to experience new farming systems and new landscapes across Australia. Farming and the agricultural workforce has said, it needs a learning and earning pathway that recognises and certifies their skills and knowledge, in tandem with learning on the job. Hello! My name’s Mason, an undergraduate at Oregon State University. This summer I’m working with Solid Carbon, a company that is working to produce an admixture that sequesters carbon into concrete. To do that we turn forestry waste into solid carbon, biochar, through a process called pyrolysis. Had the pleasure of attending the CAFRE - College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise graduation yesterday at Greenmount campus representing Dale Farm Ltd. Great to see youth and enthusiasm coming into the local Agri-Food sector. Some big challenges on the horizon but also great opportunities too. One of the biggest lessons Ive had is that learning never stops, it’s not an option in the fast-paced world we operate in. Embracing continuous education empowers us to adapt, grow, and excel in our careers and personal life’s. So from the class of 03’ to the class of 24’ I would say the best investment you can make is in yourselves.#LifelongLearning #growthmindset

🎉 The Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre skills celebration was an amazing event and a reminder of how consistent funding leveraged in a coordinated and purposeful way can lead to talent being nurtured across the country. 💡 We had the opportunity to hear and see ‘case studies’ of success via participants from early iterations of the programme, while simultaneously seeing bright sparks ( 🔥 ) being lit in the room, with recent participants who told us how they planned to influence the people around them – teams, direct-reports, colleagues, managers, peers and mentees. 🔥 These were early to mid-career professionals from different parts of aquaculture - production, management, health, feed, biology, environment, and academia, to name a few, all telling us how they planned to use #adaptability , #activelistening , #empathy, #relationshipbuilding, and even #rapidprototyping to enhance their professional experience. 🌬 It felt like a breath of fresh air, and I couldn’t help imagining what aquaculture will look like over the next ten years. 🤔 I suppose, it begs the question – who will be nurturing aquaculture talent over the next decade in the absence of a consistently funded, coordinated and purposeful programme that operates nationally in an organisation-agnostic manner?  I’d love to hear what you think.
