Every 40 seconds, someone dies from suicide; tens of millions more live with mental health conditions for which there is no good standard of care.   Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is one of these conditions.  A lesser-known subset of major depressive disorder, TRD is believed to affect more than 100 million people around the world*. People living with TRD have tried at least two different treatments within a depressive episode without success, with the chance of response decreasing with every subsequent treatment. July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States, started by Bebe Moore Campbell in 2008 to help destigmatise mental health in racially and ethnically minoritised communities. Some of the most difficult-to-treat mental health conditions, including treatment-resistant depression (TRD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and eating disorders, have very few treatment options.     However, steps are being taken to a bring about a paradigm shift that could help to change the future of mental health for the millions of people who urgently need new options.    Our CEO, Kabir Nath, explores this need for new treatments in the mental health space in the Spring edition of Pharmafile.
