Really interesting data here from the Mastercard Economics Institute on London’s dining and nightlife, and how changing working habits are resetting the city’s “economic clock”. Business areas like the City and Canary Wharf are losing out, with restaurant spending down on pre-pandemic le vels. But happy hour is up, especially on Thursdays. Commuter neighbourhoods in South East London are the big winners: their share of restaurant spending has risen from 3.7% in 2019 to 6.5% in 2023. And tourists are helping the West End keep its status as the capital’s most popular night out, accounting for a quarter of all night-time spending so far in 2023.
