This is particularly common for those residing in rural areas. Fewer specialists in rural areas: ➡️ Reproductive endocrinologists, who specialize in infertility and IVF, are mostly concentrated in cities and coastal areas. ➡️ 80% of fertility care clinics are located in the top 10 metro cities, highlighting fertility care deserts in the U.S. ➡️ The wait time to get an appointment at a fertility clinic is often several months. ➡️ There is a shortage of REI specialists, with the U.S. training only about 50 physicians in this specialty per year. This situation is worsening due to the increasing number of physicians retiring or burning out. 🤫 I've been keeping a low profile over the last few months, focusing inward and recharging. However, with the sun shining bright in Berlin today, I'm back and eager to share some of the most relevant updates from the #femtech and #fertility world of recent weeks: 🗺️ The 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐞𝐦𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 was released by Sie Ventures offering an extensive map of the European FemTech market, detailing over 540 active companies. Although the US remains a leader in this space, Europe is rapidly advancing in innovation. ❄️ According to a new study in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 every few years could keep the hormones cycling and delay menopause by a long time, maybe even several decades. But this is still in the experimental phase and experts are weighing the risks. 🚭 Fertility company Hertility has released its second annual reproductive report, which includes data from more than 325,000 women and finds that 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐬𝐦𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬 between the ages of 36 and 40 have one-fifth less AMH than those who don’t. Anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) is a protein produced by the reproductive organs and is a useful indicator for determining a woman's ovarian reserve and therefore her fertility. 👩⚖️ In February, the Supreme Court of Alabama determined that frozen embryos are legally considered "unborn children," implying that their destruction could have legal ramifications. Although a new state law was swiftly implemented to protect clinics from legal consequences, allowing IVF treatments to continue, this decision still introduced significant uncertainty. The memorandum also cites other countries such as Germany, Italy, France, New Zealand and Australia that could serve as models for regulating #IVF in the United States to prevent the excessive creation and destruction of human embryos. And fresh off the press: 💸 UK-based start-up Ovom Care has just announced their €4.8 million seed round from investors like Alpha Intelligence Capital, Ananda Impact Ventures, and Merantix. They're aiming to improve the success rates of IVF treatments to more than 50% by using advanced AI and computer vision to create personalised treatment plans.
