Here is why I did not use my name to title a portfolio or company: When I started the portfolio “Ventrait" back in 2016, I just thought it sounded better than “Devon Potts Photography”. I NOW believe that because I made that decision, it was a great move for a small brand. Here is why: - Someday, I want a solid team and I want them to be passionate about what Ventrait encompasses, not me. - I am a nobody right now. Famous people can build brands around their name because they already have an audience. For small brands, your audience does not exist yet. You have to intrigue people. - You need people to know your name in association at the beginning because your first clients will be those who know and support you as a friend, family member, or other general acquaintances. That being said, there will be a period of time, where that pool runs out. At that point I think it is good to have name separation. - Personally, it has always felt a bit egotistical. A large part of me enjoys the anonymity of building Ventrait. I hope someday when Ventrait is a larger known brand, that this remains the case. I would love to hear others opinions and thoughts? 

Even in my own business I think about SCALE. My keychains are crafted by me and allow me to create custom keychains for various partnerships. I have created exclusive keychains for AKC Museum of the Dog, The Cat Museum of New York City and even for Buddy Mercury Sings (a pup influencer). Some ask me, but why not just sell your art? It is simple. It's a way to scale. If I only offered my designs there would be more limitations on who would desire my art. I have also designed keychains as well for partnerships, with an end to end product and service. I think of myself FIRST as an artist and second as a business. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't think about how your business would scale. This also goes for how I design. Can we reuse this from a code perspective? Is this section static or can it be made module? How does this intiviate scale with time and able to be maintained? How people interact with your business and product matters the most but if it isn't sustainable from a business perspective it will eventually fizzle out or be cut all together. #business #productdesigner #petportraits #artist

Stand and deliver... In my world (the Studio) the relationship between the photographer and the client is paramount for creating stunning, incredible images. This collaboration goes beyond a simple business transaction – it's a partnership grounded in trust, communication, and shared vision. The vision being to make the subject look the best that they could possibly look in that moment. It’s not what they think they should like, it’s not what they want to look like. It’s about accepting and appreciating themselves for who they are in the here and now. I understand it can be challenging stepping in front of my lights. We are our worse critics we mirror ourselves with negativity. We look for what is wrong not what is right. I can reassure I have had no one left my studio disappointed. This because I have a few rules that I live by; Never promise anything I cannot deliver. Have a clear understanding of what is required of me. Highlight the benefits of working with my brand Match those benefits to what my client needs Be sure to explain why, when I make a request. Friends - I'm proud to announce the launch of Kurtz Clicks. I've spent much of the last year imagining and building this business – now I'm ready to share it. The brand will offer photography, video, and writing services. For me this launch ushers in a new chapter and a return to where everything started. At 46, I've been working longer than I haven't. It's time for me to do what I love, and I'm grateful for the chance to do so. At 18 years old I left home for Syracuse University, and four years later I had a job offer for my dream job – I was going to become a sports broadcaster. And for about a decade, I lived that dream, with stops at local CBS, NBC, and ABC outlets up and down the East Coast. I anchored sportscasts at 6 and 11 p.m., shared stories of local athletes, and regularly popped a very heavy camera on my shoulder in between. And I loved all of it. Next came an industry shift from local TV to the internet, from on-camera to online, with another decade-long stint, this time as part of CNN's ever-evolving digital team. About a year ago, I started to do some soul-searching and asked myself: how do I go back to those early years, the years of telling stories, of sharing my love of writing, of capturing moving and poignant images? Kurtz Clicks is how. This is not a pivot or a rebrand; it's a return. To photography and videography. To the days of tortured writing and waiting until deadline to choose the perfect word. To sharing a new story, a new way, with an audience. The technology has changed, and my cameras are much smaller. But my dreams remain big, even if they look different than they did emerging from snowy Central New York all those years ago. This business is born out of me going back to move forward. It's a collection of the things that I've been doing for more than two decades, things I love doing, and things I've been told I do at a high level. So, with the luxury of time and self-reflection, I'm back to tell more stories. And to help people share theirs too. This is what it's all been leading to. Now more than ever, we see life through one lens or another. I've learned that color and clarity make life more beautiful and meaningful. So, I'm here to make your world brighter. Let's decorate your home with landscape photography. Let's take down the awkward, cookie-cutter school photos, and replace them with images of you and your family doing what you love. I'm doubling down on photography as it's the work I've come to truly enjoy. Writing, however, remains my bread and butter. So, Kurtz Clicks will offer both. Why is it easier to offer advice and expertise to others, yet when it comes to ourselves, we find ourselves in the dark?! I realised I’ve been having a bit of an identity crisis since taking this leap into solopreneurship. I've felt hesitant and uncomfortable about fully embracing what makes me great at what I do and what distinguishes me in this field. And why? Fear of judgement of others. Namely other creative professionals. What is it with us creatives and imposter syndrome?! This insecurity arises from the fact I have two distinct client types, brands and families. The story I’ve been telling myself is that brands or agencies might dismiss me as being ‘just a family photographer’… When in actual fact there is nothing less creative about family photography, and since becoming a mum myself I have become so drawn documenting the most fleeting and impactful time in our lives. And that is a special thing. As a result, I’ve had the most basic website, showing a handful of diverse images and then gate keeping the specifics to landing pages to be accessed directly. For someone who is all about authenticity, that’s not very authentic… In my mission to break free from this, I've focused on what lies at the core of my work: the human experience. I have a natural talent for capturing honest and authentic emotions, experiences and expressions, and I truly believe those types of images are needed in every kind of project. People increasingly crave the real and the relatable, not the staged and contrived. So I’m taking my own advice, getting uncomfy, and owning my superpower. Here’s my elevator pitch: My eye for the subtle nuances of human emotion ensure that I can elevate any story with the honesty it deserves.
