At the end of everyday I always assess how the day really went… For me it’s important to review the mistakes, problems, opportunities, productivity, time management, and accomplishments that I made for that day. This has made me improve tremendously as a leader and individual. I’m not saying this works for everyone but evaluating every step that you took for that day can allow you to have accelerating growth overtime. Simple critiques and improvments are okay because it means that you’re getting better.

One thing I've learnt overtime as a strategic communication expert which I often share with my clients is that it is better to be proactive than to be reactive. There are many reasons for this. I'll share a few. 1. Being proactive let's you take control of the narrative. The information you put out is often the reference point and what people first believe. This entails having a clear vision of what you want to communicate and the steps to achieve it. 2. You don't have to play catch up. You make things happens and achieve more goals. 3. When you are proactive, there is a chance that you have already though of a scenario and you are ready to handle it in the even that it occurs. 4. It saves you time and reduces stress. This, however, does not rule out the fact that there are situations when the most proactive team has to be reactive. When this happens, try to balance the information by communicating as much facts as possible to help the public make up their mind about the situation. Photo source: Google.

Overtime In a conversation with a friend, I heard him say that working 11-12 hours a day was considered normal in his industry. I've always heard this from people in marketing and sales. My support extended to those in the role. I've heard several people talk about working overtime and everyone's experience of stress or being overworked a common topic. Couple of things that my mind can't stop thinking about 1. If everyone in a team works 10-12 hours - why isn't that team hiring? Won't in most scenarios, the cumulative of everyone's OT near the headcount of 1 or 2 additional hire? (Assuming a team size of 5, 2 hour overtime = 10 hours for the team = 1 headcount)? 2. If the team has people who leave work till the last minute - why not let them do the time and release others? 1 spoilt sport shouldn't be the reason for a team's misery. 3. If incentives is such a catch - maybe that's the area of control and actioning. Shouldn't we managers be equally responsible for allowing such work culture and loose ends? 4. Everyone wants better talent, but are you grooming your talent when you have them? Equipping them to become more efficient and quicker for their betterment? Equipping their knowledge and skills? I think we can all pose a lot of questions and talk about problems like it isn't ours to fix, but at some point we have got to pick up our tools and work it out - not just for us, but for everyone's work-life balance.

A new federal #overtime pay rule went into effect Monday, expanding the protections to and earnings potential for about 1 million salaried workers. The U.S. Department of Labor’s rule change affects the exemption criteria for overtime pay. This overtime exemption — the executive, administrative or professional (“EAP”) exemption — applies when employees performs certain job duties and have higher salaries. The salary threshold to be "exempt" just jumped from $35,568 per year to $43,888. With a higher threshold for exemption, more workers are entitled to 1.5 times pay for overtime work. The threshold is scheduled to increase again on Jan. 1 to $58,656, which will benefit 3 million more people, according to the White House. Life is all about processes and principles. If something is referred to as a process, it means it has steps which must be followed to achieve the goal. Never be afraid to repeat a process because you didn't get it right the first time. Repeating the process is your opportunity to be better at it and overtime become an expert. Make up your mind to be willing to go again, even when the first or second attempt didn't work. Whatever you do, don't give up.
